A legitimate passport is a crucial document that a person must own to travel outside his/her country. Online Passport Renewal Process

The first step in applying for a passport renewal online is to create a passport account on Passport Seva's official website. A passport account can be created by following the steps outlined below:

  • Step 1: You have to first register for passport renewal on the Passport Seva website
  • Step 2: If already registered on the website, you can login using the link 'Existing User Login'
  • Step 3: If you are not an existing user, you will have to create an account by clicking on 'New User Register Now'
  • Step 4: Next, select the passport office closest based on your address
  • Step 5: Provide the basic details that include name, date of birth etc. and create a login ID and password
  • Step 6: You will receive an email with an activation link
  • Step 7: Activate the account using the link in the email
  • Step 8: Once you have signed in to the passport account, go to the 'Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport' tab.

Filling in the Passport Renewal Application

Follow the steps mentioned below to fill the passport renewal application:

  • Step 1: After creating an account, you will have to fill in the online form
  • Step 2: Click on the 'Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport' link and fill in the form
  • Step 3: Once the form has been duly filled-in, click on 'Validate' to save a copy of the form
  • Step 4: You will have to upload the filled-in form and click 'Submit'. It is advisable to verify all information entered before you submit the form to avoid errors
  • Step 5: Book your slot as per your convenience
  • Step 6: Make the payment either online or offline
  • Step 7: Click on 'Print Application Receipt'.

How to Track Status of Your Passport Renewal?

The following are the steps to track the status of your passport renewal:

  • Step 1: Go to Passport Seva's official website
  • Step 2: Go to the homepage and click 'Track Application Status’
  • Step 3: Select Passport/PCC/IC/GEP as the application type
  • Step 4: Enter your passport file number and date of birth
  • Step 5: Select 'Track Status' from the drop-down menu. Your passport renewal status will be displayed on the screen.

How to Book a Passport Renewal Appointment

The following are the steps to scheduling an appointment to renew your passport:

  • Step 1: Go to Passport Seva's official website
  • Step 2: Access your account
  • Step 3: From the 'View Saved and Submitted Application' menu, select 'Pay and Schedule Appointment link'
  • Step 4: Pay the required fee after booking the appointment. Payment methods include credit cards, debit cards, SBI challans, and net banking
  • Step 5: Select 'Print Application Receipt' from the drop-down menu. This receipt includes the application reference number/appointment number.

On the day of your appointment, bring the ARN and all original documents to the Passport Seva Kendra/Regional Passport Office.

Renewal of Short Validity Passport (SVP)

For SVP, the passport renewal process is quite simple. All that is required of the individual is a visit to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and the submission of an application for the renewal of a Short Validity Passport (SVP).

Passport Application Renewal Requirements

When renewing a passport, a person must submit additional documents along with the application form. For passport renewal, there is a 'Document Advisor' on the Passport Seva Kendra website. Different documentation is required depending on the type of passport being renewed (regular/tatkal) and the applicant's age (child/adult). The following are the general documents for the majority of applications:

  • Original old passport
  • Copies of the first and last two pages of the passport that have been self-attested.
  • Copy of the Emigration Check Required (ECR)/Non-ECR page that has been self-attested.

Indian Passport and Validity

Several countries extend Visa on Arrival (VoA) to Indian passport owners. In some cases, Indian passport holders can enter a few countries even without a Visa. An Indian passport is valid only for 10 years from the date of issue. The date of issue and expiry of the passport are explicitly mentioned in the passport. An Indian passport can have 36 or 60 pages. Different types of passports can be applied for in India:

Regular Passport - Blue Passport

Blue passports are usually distributed to the overall population. The colour is managed for easy description among other passports with valid status. Usually, navy blue passports are declared for regular travel such as vacations or business trips.

Diplomatic Passport - Maroon Passport

A diplomatic passport is assigned to Indian diplomats (politicians or other government staff), top-ranking state officials and diplomatic couriers. Directors like IAS (Indian Administrative Services), IPS (Indian Police Services) can use diplomatic passports.

Applications for such passports are provided with a unique approach and the entrance is more comfortable as compared to the common applicants. It is not simple to bring any legal lawsuit against diplomatic passport residents visiting abroad.

If the internet references are to be considered, the government is further preparing to begin the orange shade passport. Passports with orange colour will be assigned to a part of the people who did not study beyond class 10th. Official Passport- White Passports

The official timeline for receiving a normal passport is 30 days from the time or date of applying. It takes two to three weeks to receive a fresh passport or a renewed passport. If applying for Tatkal, you can receive a passport within one to three working days.
