What is the procedure for a name change?

There is a set of protocols that one needs to follow to go for a name change. One can follow the steps mentioned below to change the name:

  • The first step is to draft an affidavit stating that you would be going for a name change and get it approved.
  • Once the affidavit work is done, you need to publish an advertisement in the newspaper stating that you have gone for a name change. The advertisement should have both the old name and the new name.
  • The applicant needs to get the documents published in the Gazette of India.

When you have completed all the steps of the name change, the next step is to go for a change of name on important documents like PAN card, Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID card, ration card, etc.

What are the various documents required for a name change on the PAN card?

If you have gone for the name change process for any of the reasons mentioned above, you would be required to change the name on the PAN card. Before you go ahead and apply for updating the name, you would be required to have certain documents handy with you:

  • Identity proof
  • Address Proof
  • Date of Birth
  • Aadhaar card
  • Newspaper advertisement that you have gone for a name change
  • Passport

How to go for Name Change on PAN Card in India

There are incidences where the wrong name gets entered on PAN card. You will have to apply for it officially when you have gone to change your name. The following steps will be helpful for you:

  • If you are applying for name change online, then you can place the request via TIN-NSDL or UTIITSL. Or else you can click on this link https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/correction.html.
  • Fill the form and update the information.
  • Add your identity proof, address prod, and DOB.
  • Next, you will have to pay the amount. You can make the online payment via debit card, credit card, or net banking
  • On the hard copy, you will have to paste your passport size photograph and sign it.
  • Mail this form to NSDL address. Make sure that you add your address proof, ID proof, date of birth certificate, and a copy of your PAN card along with the application form.

Alternatively, you can update your name online by authenticating using the Aadhaar card. The complete process is online and the authentication is done through Aadhaar-based OTP verification. But, you will have to first get your name updated and register your mobile number in Aadhaar to avail of this facility.
