A marriage certificate in Maharashtra is a legal document certifying a bride and bridegroom’s matrimonial bond. The State Government concerned is empowered to grant marriage certificates in any State of India. The District Marriage Registrar shall issue a marriage certificate, as per religious marriage and special marriage laws. In India, under two statutes, namely the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act, marriage registration can be done.

Purpose of Marriage Registration

The following are the benefits of having Maharashtra marriage certificate: 

  • A marriage certificate can be used as an official record. 
  • To limit child marriages, it guarantees the minimum age for marriage. 
  • This certificate allows widows to claim the patrimony. 
  • This may also be used for managing bigamy or polygamy. 
  • It acts as a disincentive for husbands to leave their families. 
  • This credential supports women in exercising husband and child custody rights to asylum. 
  • Also, its use continues when attracting passport service, visa to receive immigration benefits.

This is also conclusive evidence of a marriage.

Eligibility for applying of Marriage Registration

The bride and groom will meet the following eligibility criteria for the certificate of marriage at Maharashtra: 

  • To get the marriage certificate in Maharashtra, the groom or the bride should be a permanent resident of India. 
  • The Party concerned should have a living spouse at the time of the marriage. 
  • The groom must be 21 years old, and the bride must be 18.
  • The Hindu Marriage Act applies in cases where Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs are both the husband and the wife, or in cases where they have converted to either of these faiths. 
  • If either the husband or the wife is not Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs, the marriage is registered under the 1954 Special Marriage Act 
  • The charge may differ if registered after the date of marriage after two months (or a defined time). 

Note: If you have not met the age limit, you can not apply for a marriage certificate, because that would be viewed as an offense.

Documents required to apply for Registration

  • Fully filled out the application form and signed by both husband and wife. Form Link: Application Form Please select the form under “Form.” 
  • Address proof of the current residing address that should be on the name of the bride or grooms (address proof- Voter ID/*Ration Card / Passport, Driving license). 
  • 2 passport size photographs.
  • Identity proof
  • 2 Pictures of the bride and groom in marriage dress taken during the ritual of marriage to show clearly that they are taking part in the ceremony. 
  • Husband & Wife separate marriage affidavits in the specified format. 
  • Proof of date of birth of both husband and wife (Documents which are preferably 10th-class mark sheet with date of birth as proof of age).
  • Aadhaar Card 
  • Marriage Invitation Card
  • Three witnesses to get your marriage approval. 
  • 2 affidavit that the couple wishes to marry each other willingly free from threats that requires for marriage at a later stage.
  • Divorce decree in case of divorce 
  • Death Spouse Certificate, in widow/widower case. 
  • Note: A Gazetted Officer will testify to all the above documents

  • To get the next tab, select the “Marriage registration and certificate” option under the “Panchayat raj department / Department of Urban Development.” 
  • Additionally, on this page, the application form will open. Fill out the information in the form, upload the documents that are scan, and pick the correct information. Moreover, hit the “Continue” tab to apply after completing the requirements. 
  • Moreover, the applicant should receive the application in his email after submission of the application and it can be downloaded in PDF format. 
  • A copy of the document must have a printout.
  • On that date, applicants need to be present before the registrar along with witnesses. Please apply as you have received the printout.

There are also other requirements to become the marriage witness and they are: 

  • The witnesses should have been 21 years old. 
  • Anyone who has witnessed the wedding of the couple will be a witness to the marriage registration.
