How to Apply for Marriage Registration in Hyderabad

The Telangana Registration and Stamps Department has said their revenue has fallen nearly by 10 times in the first quarter of 2020-21 fiscal. The department registered only 22 marriage registrations in the first three weeks of April because of the lockdown. 


A marriage certificate is legal proof that validates a marriage. To obtain it, an applicant must apply to the sub-divisional magistrate office. Additionally, Under two Acts, namely the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act, Marriage Registration can be completed in the State of Telangana.

Purpose of Marriage Registration

A marriage certificate is an essential document required for exhibiting any couple’s legal marital status. Moreover, a marriage certificate is a vital document and conclusive marriage proof that helps 

  • As evidence, if you want to change your name post marriage
  • On questions of a child’s legitimacy, 
  • Moreover, In the case of a divorce, 
  • Claim spousal property if you are not a nominee, 
  • To claim life insurance in case of a breakdown 
  • Besides other purposes, as part of a genealogical history

This is also conclusive evidence of a marriage.

Eligibility for applying of Marriage

  • The age of registration for marriage is 21 for males and 18 for females.
  • A marriage that has already been solemnized can be licensed under either the 1955 Hindu Marriage Act or the 1954 Special Marriage Act. 
  • The Hindu Marriage Act applies in cases where both the husband and the wife are Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs or where they have converted to any of those religions. 
  • Whether either the husband or the wife or both are not Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs, the marriage is registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954,
  • Additionally, it can be documented within 90 days without fine and within 90-150 days penalty fees have to be given.

Documents required to apply for Registration

The following documents are required when you get to the registrar’s office for the registration of your marriage.

  • Registration in Form- A: Application Form — a full application form signed by both husband and wife.

  • Address evidence of current residential address that should be on the name of the bride or groom (Proof of Address- Voter ID/ Ration Card/ Passport, Driving License) 
  • Moreover, 2 Passport size photographs
  • Similarly, 2 photographs of the bride and groom in marriage dress taken during the marriage ceremony that indicates that they are taking part in the marriage ceremony.
  • Moreover, different marriage affidavits in a specified manner from Husband & Wife are required. 
  • Birth certificate of both husband and wife (Documents that serve as proof of age ideally 10th class mark sheet with date of birth) Aadhaar Card 
  • Additionally, Marriage Invitation Card 
  • Additionally, Both documents must be self-attested.
  • Therefore, Three witnesses to validate the marriage. 

Procedure for Marriage Registration

  • One that applies to the Sub-Registrar Office by filling in the registration form (Jurisdiction, husband, or wife residing with a valid proof of address). 
  • Moreover, copies of all the documents requests should attach in the application form. 
  • Additionally, the application should be within 30 days of the marriage, the couple should request to do so. 
  • On that day, all parties need to be present before the ADM along with a Gazetted Officer who attended their marriage. 
  • All witnesses will sign before the Registrar.

Witnesses of Marriage

It’s necessary to get a witness’s signature to register the marriage. There are also other requirements to become a marriage witness and they are: 

  • The witnesses should have been 21 years old. 
  • Additionally, anyone who witnesses the wedding of the couple will witness the it. 
  • Moreover, the witnesses select to be the nearest blood relation from each bride and bridegroom. 
  • Further, Preferably they demand that one of the parents, along with their identity and address verification, be the witness to the registration.

Fees of Registration

  • Rs. 100/-In the case of the Hindu Marriage Act. 
  • Rs.150/- in Special Marriage Act case.
