Purpose of Marriage Registration

  • The age of registration for marriage is 21 for males and 18 for females.
  • A marriage that has already been solemnized can be licensed under either the 1955 Hindu Marriage Act or the 1954 Special Marriage Act. 
  • The Hindu Marriage Act applies in cases where both the husband and the wife are Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs or where they have converted to any of those religions. 
  • Whether either the husband or the wife or both are not Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs, the marriage is registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954,
  • Additionally, it can be documented within 90 days without fine and within 90-150 days penalty fees have to be given.

Documents required to apply for Registration

The following documents are required when you get to the registrar’s office for the registration of your marriage.

  • Registration in Form- A: Application Form — a full application form signed by both husband and wife.

  • Address evidence of current residential address that should be on the name of the bride or groom (Proof of Address- Voter ID/ Ration Card/ Passport, Driving License) 
  • Moreover, 2 Passport size photographs
  • Similarly, 2 photographs of the bride and groom in marriage dress taken during the marriage ceremony that indicates that they are taking part in the marriage ceremony.
  • Moreover, different marriage affidavits in a specified manner from Husband & Wife are required. 
  • Birth certificate of both husband and wife (Documents that serve as proof of age ideally 10th class mark sheet with date of birth) Aadhaar Card

  • Therefore, Three witnesses to validate the marriage. 

Procedure for Marriage registration

  • One that applies to the Sub-Registrar Office by filling in the registration form (Jurisdiction, husband, or wife residing with a valid proof of address).
