The provident fund can then be used by the account holder to meet cost of living expenses during retirement. The fund can also be used prior to retirement in certain emergency cases. The scheme was implemented through the enactment of the Employees’ Provident Funds & Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952 and is regulated by the Employee Provident Fund Organisation or EPFO for short. In this article, you’ll know how to check UAN passbook status.

With the digitization of government administration and considerable advances in technology, an account holder can now easily check his / her account balance online from the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) portal. In this article, let we will explore how to avail one this service of viewing the UAN Passbook status and the PF account balance online.

What Is UAN?

Universal Account Number (UAN) is allotted by the EPFO to every member of the PF scheme. It is a unique 12-digit number that allows the member to have multiple PF accounts. The UAN is a permanent number and remains constant, irrespective of the number of jobs the account holder switches. Whenever the member joins a new organization, a new Member ID is created by the employer and is linked with the UAN. Thus, under the same UAN passbook, a member can have multiple Member IDs.

The main objective behind this new function is to capture the KYC details (identity and address of the customer) of its members in order to eliminate the dependency on the employer and improve the quality of service. EPFO helps employers and employees access the services online on their portal.
