Difference between FSSAI and AGMARK

Agmark’s certificate is different from FSSAI. The latter is compulsory to sell a food product with a safety license issued by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Whereas, the Agmark is an agricultural commodity standard stamp.

Every product across industries is certified as per quality standards. When it comes to food products, there are acts such as Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 among others. These ensure that we consume quality products that are free from adulteration. The latest standards that deal with food products are FSSAI and AGMARK. Get to know the differences between these standards from here.

Initially, every product manufactured and distributed in India was governed by a separate act which was designed and planned for that particular product specifically. For instance, the Vegetable Oil Products Order 1947, Milk Products Order 1992, and so on for almost all significant products we consume. However, as time went by and more and more products were added to this list, it became challenging for people to keep track of these laws as they were just too many of them. The changing environment in the country led to several changes in food safety laws and translating them into every act took a lot of time, resources and effort. This was when they brought on the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 which brought under one roof all previous acts that dealt with food products. This consolidation made it a lot easier for people to keep tabs on these laws and ensure that the standard of food products does not drop within the country.

It certifies and provides a base or standard which covers all food items and makes sure that these items are hygienic and safe for consumption. The FSSAI certification works the same way a checkpoint does as it makes sure the food is safe or good enough to eat. Every business related to food or food processing such as cold storage, manufacturing, distribution and even packaging have to comply with the FSSAI guidelines and must have a valid FSSAI license to function in India.
