India majorly exports oil, gems, precious stones, construction equipment, handloom, pharmaceuticals, iron, and steel to other countries whereas imports crude oil, electrical equipment, plastic, and plastic equipment.  There is huge scope to start the import-export business. In India, to start a business involved around the import and export of goods and services, the IEC Certificate (Import Export Code) is mandatory. It is a 10 digit identification number. Director-General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India issues the certificate.  

Let us understand the procedure, technical requirements to obtain the certificate,

Technical requirements

  1. A bank account and a valid PAN.
  2. A valid mobile number and email id
  3. Scanned copies of all the documents required (in case of online application). 

Documents Required

  1. Self-attested PAN copies. 
  2. Address Proof (Electricity Bill, Sale deed, Rent agreement, Aadhaar card, Passport, etc).
  3. Two passport size photographs of applicants.
  4. Bank certificate in the prescribed format (Appendix 18A). 
  5. Canceled cheque of the company account.
  6. Bank receipt/ demand draft of Rs 500 in favor of zonal DGFT, in case of offline form submission. It is the application fee. 
  7. Self-addressed envelope duly stamped. (Rs 15 for local & Rs 20 for outstation) for offline submission.
  8. IEC application form, duly filled and signed by all applicants.
  9. In the case of Private and Public limited companies,
  1. Extract of Board resolution favoring applicants.
  2. Copy of Memorandum of Association.
  3. Form 32 (in case of change of directors) and Form 18 (in case of address change).
  1. In case of Partnership firm,
  1. NOC from other partners to authorize one of them.
  2. Copy of partnership deed.
  3. Copy of Aadhaar card of all partners.

How to apply for IEC Certificate:

To obtain the IEC Certificate, both online and offline procedures are available. For the offline process, an application form ANF 2A along with attested documents are needed to be submitted at the nearest DGFT offices. DGFT has regional offices across the country. ANF 2A forms are available at all DGFT regional offices or it can be downloaded from the DGFT website.  A copy of the ANF 2A is shown in the figure.

Detail procedure to apply offline

  1. Get the ANF 2A form & fill it carefully furnishing all the required details.
  2. Submit the duly filled form along with the required documents, bank payment receipt/ demand draft of Rs 500 at DGFT zonal office or it can be sent by post too. In the case of IEC modification, the application fee is Rs. 200. 
  3. You will be given a file number. Using this file number, you can keep checking the status of your application on the DGFT website. 
  4. IEC certificates generally get delivered by post in one to two weeks.

4. PAN details will be verified as per the Central Board of Direct Tax records.

5. After verification, you should enter your mobile number and email address. Additionally, the mobile number and email id will use for future login purposes. Moreover, you will receive an OTP on these contact details.

6. Additionally, enter the OTP in the box, and you will direct to the page, where you will need to furnish the details about your business and firm.

7. Upload all the necessary documents.

8. After entering all the details, make the online payment for the application of Rs 500 and click ‘submit’.  

9. Therefore, all your documents and details will have verification and an IEC certificate will generate for your business.

Procedure to print the Certificate:

  1. Visit the DGFT website and click on ‘view your IEC’.
  2. Enter the details of PAN, name on PAN card, Date of incorporation, Latest file number, and latest file date.

3. You will receive an OTP on your initially registered mobile number and Email id. Enter the OTP, PAN, mobile number, Email id, and Captcha again. And click on ‘SUBMIT’.

4. As you submit the details, you will direct to your IEC certificate window. Additionally, on the right-hand top corner click the ‘PRINT’ button.

If there is a necessity to modify IEC then online and offline processes are almost the same. But the applicable charges will be Rs 1000 (if modification is after 90 days of issuing IEC). Further, to Modify IEC within 90 days, no fee is applicable.

The moment you download your IEC certificate, you are ready to run your import-export business globally.
