How to check a company is registered in India

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) runs a government portal containing details of all the companies incorporated in India. It essentially is a directory to access the list and other details of all the companies and limited liability partnerships (LLP). It publishes the data online which is publically available on MCA. Apart from checking the details of the company as well as charge details and the details of the signatory of the company.

This has made it easier for the citizens to check the registration status and allied details of the company like the registration number of the company, type of the company, date of incorporation, charges of a company, the directors of the company, etc. Apart from the basic necessary details, the balance sheets and other documents of a company along with annual returns are also available on the website on payment of appropriate fees.

What are the steps to check the registration status of a company? 

Step 1: Firstly, simply log on to the official MCA Website in order to access the portal. The official link to the MCA website has been given here: http://www.mca.gov.in/. It should look like the screenshot provided below. This is the homepage of the website, from where you can proceed further.

Step 2: Once you are logged in to the home-page of the website. The next step is to select the ‘MCA Services’ tab. Once you select the tab, it will direct you to the opening of a drop-down. Amongst the link, the next step is to click on the tab which reads- ‘View Company/LLP Master Data’. The entire list of services as it will appear in the drop-down, have been given below in the screenshot.

Step 3: Now you will be redirected to a form where you must fill in the companies CIN. Once the CIN is done, then enter the captcha code and click on the ‘Submit’ button.  It should look like the screenshot given below. In case you do not have the CIN Number, the same can also be searched for CIN by clicking on the search icon beside ‘Company/LLP Name’ field [highlighted in red].

If you have filled in all the details correctly, the result page will show the following details inter-alia:

  1. CIN/LLPIN/1A Ref No.
  2. Company or LLP Name.
  3. State in which company is there.
  4. Registration date.
  5. Company status.
  6. ROC information and registration number of the company.
  7. Company category like company limited by shares or by guarantee or an unlimited company.
  8. Class of company public or private company.
  9. The authorized capital of the company and the paid-up capital of the company.
  10. Date of incorporation.
  11. Address and email of the company.
  12. The listing status of the company.
  13. Date of last annual general meeting and company status.

Other services: 

Apart from the above-mentioned details, one can also check the following services:

  • The index of charges of the company: The company has a charge when it raises a loan from the bank or other financial institutions. One can check whether a company has taken any bank loan or from any other financial institution. Then it will display the state of charge created, charge amount and holder and address of charge holder.
  • The signatory details of the company: This contains the list of directors of company or partners of LLP can be found using the signatory details of the company it will state their DIN number details, name of directors, address of directors address of the directors and designation and date of appointment and digital signature status.

A company’s balance sheets and other records along with tax statements can also be found on the website when paying appropriate fees. Now let us find out what is DIN and DSC.
DIN or Director Identification Number is a specific Identification Number allocated to a person named as the company’s director. Upon incorporation of the business, a DIN can be obtained by filling out the SPICe form.
A DSC is a Registered Digital Signature Certificate. You can get a DSC from any Government-recognized certifying agency. Although the entire registration process is online now, all forms require a valid Digital Signature Certificate. DSC means a Digital Certificate of Signature. It must be acquired from a Government-recognized certifying agency. With the registration process electronically now, all forms require a proper DSC. The cost of purchasing DSC can vary, relying in large part on the certifying entity from which it may be obtained. To file a SPICe (INC – 32) type, you need a DSC but you don’t need a DSC to access the RUN and register.
