However, in recent times, the security concerns regarding Aadhaar data has come under scrutiny for being lacklustre. As a result, the UIDAI has provided facilities to lock biometric data associated with the Aadhaar online. Not only does such a service help protect the biometric data of users, but it also helps prevent their misuse. Aadhaar Biometric Data Locking

Currently, the UIDAI provides two ways to lock the Aadhaar data of its users – one being through its website, and the other through the m-Aadhaar app. The m-Aadhaar (aadhaar app) serves as the official app of the UIDAI and is a system that allows users to safely and securely store their Aadhaar card on smartphones. Both methods allow for better security and are also great at improving the accessibility and ease of use of the Aadhaar.

Lock /Unlock Through UIDAI Website

Lock Aadhaar Data
  1. Go to the official UIDAI website to lock and unlock your Aadhaar biometric data.
  2. From the homepage, go to Services>>Aadhaar Services>>Lock/Unlock Biometrics Aadhaar
  3. A pop-up will now ask you for your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the security code associated with it.
  4. Next, click on the Send OTP button to proceed.
  5. Once you receive an OTP on your registered mobile number, enter that onto the screen and login using it.
  6. Next, enter the 4-digit security code you have, and then click on Enable.
  7. Doing this will lock your biometric data, and to use it again, you will have to unlock it.

Unlock Aadhaar Data
  1. To unlock, click on login, and then proceed to input your Aadhaar number and security code.
  2. To proceed, click on Send OTP.
  3. You will now receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.
  4. Enter this onto the space provided on the screen and click on login.
  5. To temporarily unlock your biometric data, enter your security code, and click on Unlock.
  6. This will help you unlock your data for ten minutes.
  7. The screen will display your locking date and time.
  8. Once the timer runs out, your biometric data will automatically get locked.
  9. The other option you have is to permanently disable the biometric lock, though this isn’t advised.

Permanent Unlock of Biometric Data

  1. To do this, login to the UIDAI portal using your credentials.
  2. From the homepage, enter your Aadhaar number.
  3. Next, enter your security pin and then click on Disable.

Your biometric details will now remain unlocked till you log in and lock them again.

Lock /Unlock Through m-Aadhaar

Lock Aadhaar Data
  1. First and foremost, you will have to download and install the official m-Aadhaar application on your phone.
  2. After you install the app, you will have to add your profile to the m-Aadhaar application.
  3. Once you have a profile, open your profile using the app.
  4. Click on the three dots on the top right corner of the home screen.
  5. Next, choose the Biometric Settings option.
  6. To enable the locking, tick the option for the same.
  7. This will result in the application sending you an OTP to your registered mobile number.
  8. The app will automatically feed this OTP onto the field once the message with the OTP is delivered.
  9. While your biometric is now locked, it might take around 6 hours to activate.

Unlock Aadhaar Data

  1. First and foremost, you will have to download and install the official m-Aadhaar application on your phone.
  2. After you install the app, you will have to add your profile to the m-Aadhaar application.
  3. Once you have a profile, open your profile using the app.
  4. Click on the three dots on the top right corner of the home screen.
  5. You will now see a tick mark next to the Biometric Lock Settings option.
  6. Click on it once more to deselect the option and unlock your biometric data.
  7. This will result in the application sending you an OTP to your registered mobile number.
  8. The m-Aadhaar app will automatically feed the OTP into the system as there is no system to input the OTP manually.
  9. Once the request is approved, your biometric data will be temporarily unlocked for around 10 minutes.
  10. However, the m-Aadhaar does not provide an option to disable the biometric lock permanently. To do this, you will have to go to the official UIDAI website and follow the steps mentioned above. 

Things to Know About Aadhaar biometric Lock/Unlock

  1. Agencies, such as banks and telecom services, will ask users to verify their identity using their Aadhaar authentication option. Hence, to prevent the misuse of Aadhaar in such cases, the government has come up with the biometric data locking system. 
  2. As the system aims to protect the biometric data of the users, they cannot authenticate anything until they unlock their biometric data. The system locks both the user’s fingerprint and iris scan data.
  3. The biometric lock can be temporarily and permanently disabled as per your requirement. While the temporary unlock gives the user 10 minutes to perform the authentication, the permanent unlock removes all security features.
  4. In case the authentication takes longer than ten minutes, it will not be able to access the records, leading to failure. In such cases, the user will have to unlock a second time and attempt the authentication again.
  5. If you disable the lock, you don’t have to unlock it every time you want to authenticate something. Also, to avail such a facility, you need to make sure your Aadhaar contains your registered mobile number on it. Furthermore, the service is free and requires no extra payment.
