Profession tax is levied at the state level (but not all states) on all workers. This includes the salaried, whether working in government or non-government entities, the self-employed and professionals, including Chartered Accountants, Doctors, and Lawyers. This tax has existed since the 1970s, and states have conferred the power of levelling the Tax under Clause (2) of Article 276. The rate at which Profession tax is charged is based on income slabs set by the respective state governments. However, the maximum Professional Tax that any state can levy in a year is ₹2500. This is a tax deduction amount. Professional tax is a source of revenue for state governments, helping implement schemes for the welfare and development of the region.

Professional Tax Payment Due Date of payment in Maharashtra

  1.  In the case of tax liability of less than ₹50,000 in the previous year, the due date for payment of professional tax (PT) is 31 March. 
  2. 2. In the case of tax liability of more than ₹50,000 per month, the due date is the last day of the month for which the return is filed. 
  3. 3. In case it is the first year of registration, the due date for payment of professional tax (PT) is the last day of the month for which the return is being filed.

Profession (PT) Tax Due Date of Payment in Tamil Nadu

Every person who is liable to pay professional tax should file their return by 31st December for the entire year. This is extendable by one month.

Professional Tax Due Date of Payment in Karnataka

Every person who is liable to pay professional tax should file their returns by the 15th of the next month for which you should file the return.

Professional Tax Due Date of Payment in Kolkata

The return period is quarterly for registered employers with annual tax liability up to ₹3000. Such employers shall furnish the quarterly return within 30 days of the expiry of each quarter and pay tax before filing such return. Other employers with annual tax liability exceeding ₹3000 shall furnish quarterly returns within 30 days of the expiry of each quarter and make a monthly tax payment within 21 days of the next month in respect of the first two months of each quarter.
