What Is FSSAI? What Are The Types Of FSSAI Licenses?

To ensure that the 130 crore citizens of the nation have access to healthy and safe food, the FSSAI establishes science-based standards for food articles and regulates their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import. This article focuses on the various types of FSSAI food licenses that are issued as well as what the FSSAI is.

What is FSSAI?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an independent organisation that reports to the Indian government’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. According to the Food Safety and Standards Act, FSSAI was founded in 2006. (FSSA).  The FSSAI is a vast umbrella organisation under which numerous prior laws, rules, and guidelines pertaining to food safety are integrated.

The act consolidates the following 7 older laws:

  • 1947-Vegetable Oil Products (Control) Order,
  • 1954-Prevention of Food Adulteration Act
  • 1955-Fruit Products Order
  • 1967-Solvent Extracted Oil, De-Oiled Meal, and Edible Flour (Control) Order
  • 1973-Meat Food Products Order
  • 1988-Edible Oils Packaging (Regulation) Order
  • 1992-Milk and Milk Products Order

Main Purpose of FSSAI

  • The primary goal of FSSAI is to protect and advance public health by establishing and enforcing food safety regulations
  • It establishes food safety standards and dispels misconceptions about food and food-related business from the minds of producers, traders, consumers, and anyone else either directly or indirectly involved in the food industry
  • Simply put, the FSSAI’s job is to make sure that the food you consume is wholesome and safe
  • For this reason, they keep an eye on the ingredients and everyone involved in the production of food, from growing it to serving it
  • They also establish objectives and plans. For instance, they recently established a goal to outlaw the use of synthetic trans fats by the year 2022.

Principal goals of FSSAI

  • Creation of scientifically based food standards

The FSSAI License’s most significant feature is that, if processing takes longer than 60 days, the applicant may begin without the license without having to wait for additional processing. The Food Safety & Standards Act of 2006 has brought about significant changes in order to safeguard and improve food quality and hygienic practises. A person must obtain an FSSAI Registration and License in accordance with the Act before starting a food business. For all operations involving the production, processing, storage, packaging, and distribution of food, an FSSAI license is therefore required.
