How Does One Register As An MSME?

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, also known as MSMEs, are on the rise in India and according to the central government form the backbone of the country’s economy. To this end, the government of India has created schemes to promote such industries. Registering under the Udyog Aadhaar scheme is a first step to being eligible under these schemes.

MSMEs contribute nearly 50% of India’s total employment (45% to be precise). It also contributes to 50% of India’s total exports, and 95% of all industrial units. Over 6,000 products are manufactured by these industries, according to the official government website

MSMEs became operational in October 2006 to promote, facilitate and develop the competitiveness of India’s micro, small, and medium enterprises.

What Are MSMEs? How Are They Classified?

The current classification of MSMEs is based on the criteria of investment in plant, machinery or equipment. Further, to enjoy MSME benefits, the company is required to limit its investment to a lower limit as described in the table below:

Existing MSME Classification
Sector Criteria Micro Small Medium
Manufacturing Investment < Rs.25 lakh < Rs.5 crore < Rs.10 crore
Services Investment  < Rs.10 lakh < Rs.2 crore < Rs.5 crore

These lower limits have pulled back companies from wanting to grow, as they are unable to scale their businesses.

However, when the Central Government launched the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan in 2020, it redefined how MSMEs needed to be classified. Under the new rulings, the distinction between the manufacturing and service sectors has been removed. Further, the Centre has inserted composite criteria of both investments, as well as annual turnover.  As a result, MSMEs are now classified like this:

Revised MSME Classification
Criteria Micro Small Medium*
Investment & Annual Turnover < Rs.1 crore & < Rs.5 crore < Rs.10 crore & < Rs.50 crore < Rs.50 crore & < Rs.250 crore
