An online service delivery portal for foreign trade services offered by the Department of Foreign Trade, DGFT, has been launched by the Ministry of Commerce. Import-Export Code (IEC) is one of the services offered by Import-Export Codes, an initiative aimed at making it easier for traders to do business.

Introduction 

DGFT IEC – A country’s export trade procedure may differ from one country to another, depending on the nature of the export. As an exporter, you will have to scrutinize the intent to ensure that the terms and conditions included in it are in accordance with the import and export policy of the country in which you are operating. As part of the application process for obtaining the IEC number, the exporter must contact the Regional Import-Export Licensing Authority (RICA) referred to on the application.

An Importer-Exporter Code or IEC is essential for importing to or exporting from India. It is a 10-digit code with lifelong validity for all the branches mentioned in it. An application can be submitted online, too, with the following scanned documents:

DGFT IEC: Documents Required for IEC Certification

  1. IEC Number is requested to be issued on the letterhead of the entity.
  2. Two copies of the completed Aayaat Niryaat Form ANF, self-attested by the applicant
  3. By Appendix 18A, a certificate from the banker of the applicant should be provided.
  4. Self-attested copy of PAN card. About a single PAN number, only one IEC can be issued.
  5. An application is made by submitting a passport-sized photograph of the applicant, the director or the partner.
  6. Copies of Memorandum of Association, Articles of Association, and Incorporation Certificate (in case of a company) or LLP Agreement (in case of LLP).

DGFT IEC: A Procedure for IEC Certification

  • On the DGFT website, click the IEC Online Application option and then follow the instructions.
  • Using the file menu, select the ‘Create’ option and enter the PAN that you want to create.
  • To generate a new reference number for E-comm, the system will generate one.
  • During this step, you can enter all the details, such as the name, address, PAN card number, bank account number, etc, into the system.
  • Now that you have received the invoice from the DGFT, you have to pay the  ₹  250 through an electronic transfer.
  • Please upload the documents mentioned above in PDF format to the website.
  • Fee Payment Method (Debit/Credit Card Net Banking)
  • Preview and Print Application
  • Final Submission

So If everything you submitted is correct, you will receive the IEC within a week at the address you mention in your application (which should be the same address that appears on the letterhead).
