Your choice of business structure will significantly impact the amount of taxes your company owes. Therefore, what is the tax rate on corporations?

How To Calculate Taxes On Corporations?

A corporation, sometimes known as a C Corp, is a specific business structure that benefits owners from limited liability protection. Because corporations are considered separate legal entities, they are legally distinct from their owners, and a corporation’s conduct and financial obligations are not the owners’ responsibility (hence limited liability).

However, because companies are considered to be independent legal entities, they are subject to payment of double taxes. The corporation and its owner are responsible for paying company profits taxes. Regarding some business forms, such as sole proprietorships, taxes are paid directly by the owner, meaning that earnings are only subject to taxation once.

If you own a corporation, you must file a tax return using Form 1120, the Corporate Tax Rate in the USA. And don’t forget to include a record of your income on your tax return.

In most cases, taxes are levied against corporations at the federal and state levels. A corporation must make tax payments on its taxable income at a rate determined by the federal government and each state.

If you choose to organise your business as a corporation, you must know the tax rates applicable to corporations.

What Are The Tax Rates For Corporations?

To reiterate, there are state and federal rates applicable to corporations. Every corporation is subject to the same level of federal corporate tax in the USA, which is a flat rate. On the other hand, tax rates at the state level differ from one state to the next.

How Does One File Company Taxes In The United States?

The fifteenth day of the fourth month that follows the end of the tax year is the date domestic firms must submit federal income tax returns if they are on time (April 15 for calendar-year corporations). According to Section 2006 (a) (3) (B) of the Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act of 2015, C corporations whose fiscal years end on June 30 are required to file every time by the 3rd month’s 15th day for all the taxpayers from the start of 2026. This was a conscious decision to include this provision in the act to help veterans be able to access their health care.

All the foreign corporations apart from the FSCs (Foreign Sales Corporations) and all the  former FSCs which don’t have their physical office presence in the USA, are needed to file taxes before:

– 15th June if they follow the calendar year
– 15th day of the 6th month of their tax year.

This deadline applies to foreign corporations that do not have an office or place of business within the United States.

Example:

A company’s end of the calendar year, or fiscal year is on March 31. The deadline for the company to submit its tax return for Year 1 is July 15, Year 2, the 15th day of the fourth month after March 31, Year 2, the date on which the company’s fiscal year for Year 1 comes to a close. On the other hand, July 15 in Year 2 falls on a Saturday rather than a business day. Companies must submit the return by July 17 in Year 2, the next business day following the return date for Year 1.

A corporation that has just been founded must file its first income tax return by the 15th day of the fourth month after the end of its chosen tax year ends. It needs to check the box for “Initial Return” on page 1 of Form 1120’s Item E. If the corporation was not in existence for the entirety of the first tax year, the initial return might only cover a brief period. A corporation that terminates its operations and subsequently dissolves must submit its last income tax return by the 15th day of the fourth month after the day it dissolves. It needs to check the box labelled “final return” on page 1 of Form 1120’s Item E. If the corporation is dissolved before the conclusion of its tax year, the corporation’s final return can be for a relatively brief period.
