The Spice Board of India, or The Board for Regulation and Development of Spices trade and commerce, was formed in 1963 with the primary objective of monitoring the production, storage, export and import of spices. The board works on behalf of and in close association with various government agencies like the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (apply FSSAI online), Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, government Of India etc. to implement various Acts and Regulations framed by Central Government. These Acts/Regulations address issues such as quality control measures during collection and post-collection processing, preservation requirements, and advertising practices regulation. Once registered, you will be given a Spice Board Registration license, which must be displayed prominently at all times while you are conducting business. You can apply for registration through any Regional Office of the Board across India.

Role of Shamkris and Process of Spice Board Registration License

Section 22 (1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 states that no person shall prepare, store, sell or distribute any food which is adulterated or misbranded. Section 15 (1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act defines adulteration as making any addition of extraneous matter; substitution or alteration in whole or part of any ingredient; removal, defacing, or changing in whole or in part label used on a package containing such commodity. Thus a person who sells food without possessing a valid registration certificate has violated provisions under sections 22 (1) and 15 (1) read with section 16(d) of FSSA and may be prosecuted under these provisions. The government of India established the Spice Board to regulate trade in spices. It can issue the Registration Certificate for Spice Traders subject to fulfilling the requirements specified therein.

Spices Board Registration Process

Step 1: Submit an Online Application The first step to applying for a Spices Board Certificate is registering online on the government platform. IEC, cellphone number, and e-mail address would be required. Candidates will be rerouted to an application form after their contact number, and e-mail account has been verified.

Step 2: Uploading Documents The applicant must provide all the information requested on the form. It is worth noting that IEC should be filled out carefully because Spices Board issues CRES based on IEC details. Part 1 of the version had come to an end. Part-1 would’ve been completed, and a user-defined number would be created for reference purposes. The applicant must now enter his or her registration details and log in to the online system. The applicant must now attach all necessary documentation, including a photograph, in the file format specified.

Step 3: Make an NEFT payment. The amount will be paid after all files have been completed and uploaded. All changes to the online application must be done before payout. The government fee for new manufacturer registration is 15,000, 18% GST, and the fee for merchant registration is 10,000, 18% GST.

Step 4: Spice Board Verification Following making the payment, the application is forwarded to the board’s concerned Regional Office for validation. If an error is discovered in the application, it will be returned for correction and re-submission. The application will be submitted at HO if all necessary paperwork is submitted. It is then routed to the appropriate Regional Office after computation.

Step 5: Spice Board Certificate Issuance (CRES) The Certificate of Registration as an Exporter of Spices (CRES) will be approved upon closure of registration at HO, and the applicant will receive a login password to download the CRES certificate.
