What is Balika Samridhi Yojana?

Balika Samridhi Yojana (BSY) is a government scheme in India launched in 1997. It aims to empower girls by providing financial assistance to families below the poverty line. The scheme encourages education, offers cash incentives based on birth order, and promotes the health and nutrition of the girl child. BSY aims to address gender bias and promote the overall development of girls in India.

Objectives of Balika Samridhi Yojana

The scheme works for the welfare of girls with the following objectives:

  • Change negative attitudes towards mothers and children in families, society, and communities
  • Ensure that girls are admitted to school and continue their studies without interruption
  • Provide support for girls until they reach the age of legal marriage
  • Encourage and assist girls in income-generating activities for their own benefit

Benefits

  • The money given in Balika Samridhi Yojana will be put in an interest-bearing account in the girl child’s name
  • A bank or post office will be selected by the State Government/Union Territory Administration to open the account
  • The Public Provident Fund or National Savings Certificate programmes are the ideal choices for this since they allow the account to earn the maximum rate of interest feasible
  • No one can withdraw the money before the girl child turns eighteen years old
  • Once the girl turns eighteen and is unmarried, she can withdraw the money by showing a certificate from the Gram Panchayat/Municipality
  • If the girl gets married before turning eighteen, she can only get the ₹500 post-birth grant amount and the interest on it. Other qualified females will receive the remaining funds
  • If the girl child passes away before turning eighteen, the money in her account will go to other eligible beneficiaries under the scheme.
