The ESI or Employee State Insurance scheme offers medical and monetary benefits to all the employees of various sectors. ESI is regulated by an autonomous body, representing members who are employers, employees, State govt, Central govt, medical professionals and the Parliament. Under the ESI Act 1948, Section 2-A it is every employer’s statutory responsibility to register for ESI.
According to the notification issued by the government under Sec 1(5) of the ESI Act ,the following entities are covered under the ESI

4. Road Motor Transport Establishments
5. Newspaper establishments that are covered under the factory act
6. Private educational institutions
Under Section 46 of the Act the ESI offers six social security benefits.
Under Section 57 of the Act employees who fall under the ESI plan, hereafter called Insured Persons (IPs) and their family members are eligible to avail State Medical benefits as per the prescribed limit. The beneficiaries are entitled to medical treatment at ESI dispensaries, hospitals, diagnostic centres and other ESI-recognized institutions. They can avail:

In unforeseen circumstances, if an employee gets injured permanently or becomes disabled, losing the earning capacity, then the employee is entitled to receive certain benefits. The Medical board for Occupational Diseases does a thorough assessment considering the age of the IP and monthly wages and awards a settlement.
During the period of sickness for a maximum of 91 days in a year, the insured workers can claim up to 70 percent of their wages. But this will be upon the condition the employee has worked for 78 days over a period of 6 months and that a valid medical certification has to be submitted.
Insured women employees can claim the following maternity benefits at 100% of their wages
If the death of the employee happens during the course of employment, then 90% of his salary would be given to his nominees or dependents. In addition, IPs get INR 10,000 as funeral expense
Other need-based benefits for employees include Vocational Rehabilitation, Physical Rehabilitation in case an employee becomes physically disabled during the tenure of his employment, Old age medical Care, Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana which offers unemployment allowance, vocational training for enhancing the skills and ESI medical allowances during the period of unemployment.
