  • Any food Business Operator with an annual turnover of up to Rs. 12 lakhs.

  • Cattle slaughtering units that serve 50 + large animals or 150+ small animals or 1000+ poultry birds on a daily basis.
  • Meat processing units that process 500 kg of meat daily or 150 MT on an annual basis.
  • All food processing units including the repackers process more than 2 MT(Metric Tonnes) per day, except for grains, cereals, and pulses milling units.
  • All the producers of proprietary food products.
  • 100% of export adopted units
  • All import food items including additives and food ingredients for use of commercial purpose
  • Storage units with a controlled atmosphere and cold environment with a capacity of more than 50,000 MTs.
  • Cold or refrigerated storage with a capacity of more than 10,000 MTs.
  • A controlled atmosphere, cold storage with a capacity of more than 1,000 MTs.
  • Wholesalers who have a turnover of more than Rs.30 crores on an annual basis.

  • Types of FSSAI Registration

    All small food-related businesses require legal registration to start a business in India. In this legal registration, business incorporation entities like private limited company or proprietorship firm, etc are included. There are mainly 3 types of food licenses or FSSAI License category concerning each food-related business.

    FSSAI Basic Registration

    FSSAI basic registration is required by small businesses with a turnover of less than Rs. 12 lakh in a year. So if you are just starting your business then it requires only a basic FSSAI or food license registration. Turnover is calculated every year.

    FSSAI State License Registration

    If you have the FSSAI basic registration and the turnover of the 12 lakh rupees in a year, but if it is less than Rs. 20 Crores then it is expected as FSSAI state license registration.

    FSSAI Central License Registration

    If you are starting an import-export business or want to supply to the various government departments then it requires FSSAI central license registration. It also requires a large scale turnover of more than Rs. 20 Crore in year companies.

    What is the FSSAI License Number?

    The 14-digit number offers knowledge about the manufacturer’s license or certification details and the state of production, called an FSSAI number. The brand owner shall represent the FSSAI logo and his/her license number on the label or the name on the food package. In the case of imported food products, the dealer shall present the FSSAI logo and license number along with the signature and address of the importer on a label that is attached before customs clearance.

    Procedure for FSSAI Registration

  • FSSAI registration is started by submitting Form A to the food and safety department.
  • This application can be accepted or it may be rejected by the department within 1 hour from the application time and it is communicated to the applicant in writing.
  • If the application is accepted, then the department will permit a registration certificate with the registration number and the photo of the applicant.
  • Food Business Operators (FBO) should particularly display the certificate of registration at the place of business during the business hours.
