The Spice Board  is the primary organisation responsible for the development and international endorsement of Indian spices. The Board serves as an international link between Indian exporters and foreign importers. The Board has been leading activities to improve the quality of spices, involving all segments of the industry. Quality and hygiene are cornerstones of the Board’s growth and advertising efforts. The Spices Board Registration Act of 1986 established the Board in 1987 with the structure of cardamom production/development and export promotion of 52 spices.

Main Functions of the Spice Board

Below mentioned are the functions of spice board,

  • Spice export development, promotion, and regulation.
  • Providing certificates for spice exports and registering brokers.

Documents Required to Obtain a Spice Board Certificate as a Spice Exporter

  • Application in the prescribed form [Form 1].
  • Import-export code certificate, self-attested copy.
  • A bank certificate proving your financial situation.
  • Copy of self-attested GST certification certificate.
  • PAN card copy with self-attestation.
  • Self-certification, partnership deed/Memorandum, and Articles of Association, as applicable.
  • In the case of a spice manufacturer-exporter, a self-attested certificate issued by the Directorate of Industries.
  • A passport-sized photo with a white background is required.

The Biggest Exporter of Spices

India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of spices. The country produces 75 of the 109 varieties listed by the International Organization for Standardization and accounts for half of global spice trade. During Covid-19, Indian spices proved to be the most effective immunity booster. Indian spices can be found in medicines, oils, toothpaste, tea, coffee, and many other products.

The Spice Board organized a National Conclave on Food Safety in March 2020 with the goal of improving food safety and developing immunity.

CRES – What is It?

The Registration Cum Membership Certificate issued by the Export Promotion Council or the Commodity Board is referred to as the RCMC. Any exporter who intends to deal with restricted goods must obtain RCMC registration from the Export Promotion Council or the Commodity Board established for the products. 

The Certificate verifies that an exporter dealing with a specific product is registered with a government-approved agency or authority. The Spices Board’s CRES stands for Certificate of Registration of Spice Exporters. With effect from June 2016, those who obtained an Exporter Registration Certificate are no longer required to obtain a separate RCMC in order to take advantage of Foreign Trade Policy concessions.

Who Needs a CRES from the Spices Board?

Any person who is a Manufacturer Exporter or a Merchant Exporter of the 52 timetabled spices and Cardamom must acquire the Spice Board’s Certificate of Registration as an Exporter of Spices (CRES).

Validity of CRES

  • The Certificate of Registration as Exporter is issued for a period of “three years” as determined by the Board.
  • “2017 to 2020” is the current block year.
  • Every block year, the Certificate should be renewed.

Why NOT Export Without CRES?

  • Imprisonment for up to a year 
  • Fine of up to a thousand rupees

Quality Services by the Spice Board 

  • So, in order to demonstrate the quality of spices, they must be quality-certified. And which is acceptable to the rest of the world.
  • To address this issue, India has established its own spice quality department. Also known as the Burro of Indian Standards (BIS).
  • BIS has proposed 16 quality standards for 16 spices and spices-related products. And the Spices Board always keeps track of BIS and interacts with them about new upgrades.

A Few Programs Conducted by the Board in the Past

The programme was held at Gummidipundi Chennai in the 2017-18 school year. The first training focused on mycotoxins and illegal dyes in spices and spice products using HPLC and LCMS/MS. The second training focused on microbiological analysis of spices and spice products.

Spice Development Agency – An Overview

  • The formation of ten spice boards in most spice-growing states has been notified to the government. To ensure the complete development of the spice-growing region.
  • And the chief secretary of the same state is the head of the regional agency for a specific region. Some members are also from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • State or central government agricultural or horticultural minister.
  • Other federal or state organizations working in the same field. and agricultural universities, as well as some members of the spices board and major stack holders in various industries.
