This means we must be cautious about who we do business with and know if a company has been registered or is just operating under the guise. Easily check company registration status quickly using our online tool.

Fortunately, the internet also allows us to quickly determine whether a specific company has been registered, and who its owners are, and, if necessary, you can even pay a small fee to receive a company’s ROC filings.

So, how do you go about doing this? All you have to do is go to the website of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Significance of CIN

CIN is an abbreviation for the Corporate Identity Number (CIN), also known as the Corporate Registration Number (CRN). It is a unique 21-digit alpha-numeric identification number assigned by the ROC in different states under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA). When a company is formed, the pertaining ROC issues a Certificate of Incorporation, which includes the company’s approved name as well as a unique Corporate Identity Number. This number is required for all types of corporate entities registered in India. This means that no company can function without a CIN.

In addition to this, only one CIN is issued to a registered company. This means that no additional CIN’s are assigned to the company’s branches, manufacturing units, or warehouses. To put it another way, a company is assigned a single CIN, and all of its branches or manufacturing units must use the same number for all its official transactions and communications.

Information Contained in the CIN

Generally speaking, a company’s CIN contains four crucial pieces of information about a company. They are

  1. Year of incorporation (example: 2016)
  2. State code (example: KL – Kerala)
  3. Type of company (example: PTC – private limited)
  4. Listing status (example: U – unlisted)

This basic information can also be found on the certificate of incorporation.

How to Find the CIN Details of a Company

A company’s CIN can be found on the MCA’s portal through a search based on:

  1. ROC registration number
  2. Existing company name
  3. Company name prior to the change  (in case there is a change in the name of the company, users are required to enter the old name of the company.
  4. Inactive CIN (In case there is a change in the CIN of a company, users are required to enter the prior inactive CIN )
