How to Apply for a PAN Card Online

In this article, we will discuss how to apply for a PAN card through the online portal of the income tax department.

PAN, which stands for Permanent Account Number, is a unique identification number allotted by the income tax authority to anyone who is eligible to pay taxes, including artificial legal entities like Companies, LLPs, Trusts, Associations etc.

In recent years the Indian government has undertaken ardent initiatives to make it easier for an assessee to obtain a PAN card. The government has made it possible to apply for a PAN card, both offline and online. Even people who have misplaced their existing cards or lost their older card can apply online for a reprint of the original. Applicants may file an application through either the NSDL or UTIITSL websites. In this article, we will take a look at how to apply for a PAN Card online and offline via both online and offline means.

Documents Required For A PAN Card Application

Applicants must send a self-attested copy of any of the following documents as evidence to the NSDL.

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter ID card
  • Driving Licence
  • Passport
  • Ration Card with the applicant’s photograph
  • Arm’s Licence
  • State/Central/PSU issued Photo ID
  • Pensioner’s card with the applicant’s photograph
  • Health service cards from the Central government
  • Ex-servicemen health scheme card with the applicant’s photograph

If the applicant does not possess any of the above, they must obtain an Identity Certificate signed by any of the following people:

  • Member of Parliament
  • Member of Legislative Assembly
  • Municipal Councillor
  • Gazetted Officer

Another alternative is for the applicant to obtain a bank certificate with an attested photo on the bank’s official letterhead with the manager’s stamp and signature.

As a Proof of Address, applicants have sent a self-attested photocopy of any one of the following documents:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Voter ID card
  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Spouse’s passport first and last page
  • Post office passbook
  • Latest property tax order
  • Government-issued domicile certificate
  • State/Central government-issued allotment letter
  • Property registration document

If they do not have any of these, the applicant can send a self-attested copy of any of the following bills, which are not older than three months:

  • Electricity bill
  • Water bill
  • Landline bill
  • Broadband connection bill
  • Proof of gas connection along with the latest bill
  • Bank account statement
  • Depository account statement
  • Credit card statement
  • If not, the applicant can submit any of the following documents;
  • Address Certificate signed by any of the following people;
    • Member of Parliament
    • Member of Legislative Assembly
    • Municipal Councillor
    • Gazetted Officer
    • Employer certificate in a prescribed format
    • As a Proof of Date of Birth, the applicant can send any of the following documents for PAN Card application;
  • Aadhaar card
  • Voter ID card
  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • Birth certificate or an affidavit
  • SSLC certificate or mark sheet
  • State/Central/PSU-issued Photo ID with name and DoB
  • Government-issued domicile certificate
  • Central Government health service scheme card
  • Ex-servicemen contributory health scheme card
  • Pension Payment Order
  • Marriage certificate

For minors, submit a copy of the parent / legal guardian’s proof of identity and address must be attached with the form

For HUFs, an affidavit by the Karta with the following details must be sent;

  • Applicant’s name
  • Father’s name
  • Address of all the coparceners
  • ID proof of Karta

An Indian citizen living abroad must submit their latest bank account statement and if the communication address listed is an office address, they must attach the proof of office address as well.

Applying For A PAN Card Online

The Indian government has made it possible for individuals to apply for a PAN card through the NSDL website by following the steps given below.

  1. First and foremost, applicants must visit the NSDL website.
  2. Next, the applicant must choose the appropriate Application type from the drop-down menu through the option New PAN or Change or Correction in existing PAN.
  3. Afterwards, the applicant must select the right category from the list provided, which involves options such as individual, the body of individuals and associations of persons
  4. Next, the applicant must fill all the required details in the application form, including the name, DoB and address.
  5. Once you submit the form, click on the Continue with PAN Application button.
  6. The applicants will now be redirected to a new page to submit digital e-KYC details.
  7. Fill in your personal details in the next part, and then follow through by submitting your contact details.
  8. Next, enter your area code, and other details to complete the form.
  9. The last section deals with document submission and declaration. Make sure you double-check all the information provided and once you are satisfied, click on Proceed.
  10. This will redirect you to the payment section through which you must complete the payment of the processing fee, via DD, Net Banking or Debit/Credit card.
  11. After making the payment, you will receive an acknowledgement slip that contains 16 digits.
  12. Applicants must take a print of this form.
  13. Next, they must attach two passport size photographs to this form and then sign it to authorise the form.
  14. The applicants must then enclose the acknowledgement form, all the required self-attested, supporting documents along with the demand draft in case you did not complete the payment online.
  15. Lastly, the applicant must label the envelope APPLICATION FOR PAN – (Acknowledgement number), and then mail the envelope containing all these documents to the NSDL address as mentioned below:

Once the office receives the application, you will receive a notification email regarding the same.

Fee Charged For PAN Card Application

PAN cards that are to be dispatched within the country will cost INR 110, while those with a foreign dispatch address will cost INR 1020 after GST addition. Applicants can make the processing fee payment by any of the following means:

  • Demand draft in favour of NSDL-PAN
  • Credit card
  • Debit card
  • Net banking
