The United Nations has recognised the need to keep track of important events, including births, deaths, and marriages. As a result, a database containing vital statistics of important and relevant life events is created.

Many states have implemented legislation or framed rules for mandatory marriage registration in response to the Supreme Court’s directions/observations in Seema v. Ashwani Kumar. All of the states and union territories felt compelled to enact legislation on the matter.

A legally recognised marriage establishes the spouse’s standing and aids in succession issues. Based on the marriage certificate, the Bombay High Court ruled in favour of a legitimate marriage in Sushma w/o Hemant Rao Bodas v. Malti w/o Madhukar Machile. The court also stated that marriage registration makes it easier to prove marriage in succession and other disputes.
