Each taxpayer under GST Registration Process is allotted a 15-digit identification number. The following  is a breakdown of the GSTIN format:

  • The first two digits represent the state code. Every state has a unique code.  For instance, the state code of Kerala is 32 and the state code of Tamil Nadu is 33
  • The next ten digits indicate the PAN number of the GST registered taxpayer
  • The thirteenth digit will be determined by the number of registrations in a state and is commonly known as the entity code
  • The penultimate digit will be the letter ‘Z’ by default
  • The last and final digit may be an alphabet or a number. It is called a check code.

Here Is the Step-By-Step Procedure for Applying for a GST Number Online

  1. Visit the online GST registration portal. Thereafter, you must undergo new user registration to obtain a valid TRN. You will require the following information to complete the process- 
  • Name of the business
  • PAN of the business
  • Email ID and mobile number.
  1. Once you complete the new user registration, log in using the TRN and Captcha code. From the ‘My Saved Application’ page, click the ‘Edit’ icon. Enter all the required details in each of the 10 sections displayed in front of you
  2. Additionally, fill in the details of ‘principal place of business and ‘commodity details’. Click ‘Save & Continue. Select the appropriate HSN code and fill in your bank account details
  3. Then you must upload scanned copies of the required documentation (such as a PAN card, proof of business address, evidence of business continuity, identification and address proof for each director, authorisation details, and bank account information)
  4. Then you must visit the ‘verification’ page and check the declaration box. You may then submit your application by either the e-Sign method, with the ‘OTP’ received on the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar card or by the EVC method, with the ‘Electronic Verification Code’ received on your registered mobile number
  5. After application submission, an ‘Application Reference Number’ (ARN) will be sent to your email ID and the registered mobile number. With the ARN, you can check the status of your application and GSTIN on the GST portal. You will most probably receive your GSTIN number within 7 working days of application submission if everything is in order.
