HSN in India

The acronym for Harmonised System of Nomenclature is HSN Code on GST Portal. This system was implemented globally to classify commodities in an organised manner. The 6-digit standard HSN Code on GST Portal is used to categorise over 5000 items and is recognised globally. The World Customs Organisation (WCO) created it, and it became operative in 1988.

Structure of the HSN Code in India

Since 1971, India has been a part of the World Customs Organisation (WCO). In the beginning, it used six-digit HSN numbers to categorise goods for Central Excise and Customs duties. The officials in charge of Customs and Central Excise added two more digits to the codes in order to increase their precision. An eight-digit HSN categorisation was the outcome of this.

The HSN Code on GST Portal classification code is used to classify almost all commodities in India, making it easier to use HSN numbers when calculating the commodities and Service Tax (GST).  Currently, the number is used to classify products in order to calculate VAT (Value Added Tax).

What is UQC in GST?

In the context of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India, UQC stands for “Unit Quantity Code.” UQC is a code that specifies the unit of measurement for a particular product or service. It helps standardise and streamline the reporting of quantities in various transactions under the GST regime.

For example, when businesses report the quantity of goods or services in their GST invoices, they need to specify the unit of measurement. UQC provides a standardised code for units such as kilograms (KG), litres (L), meters (M), numbers (NOS), and more.

Using UQC in GST helps ensure consistency and accuracy in the reporting of quantities, facilitating smooth transactions and adherence to GST regulations. It plays a crucial role in maintaining uniformity across different industries and sectors when dealing with diverse goods and services.
