How to add HSN code on GST portal?

Adding HSN Code on GST Portal. It is a six-digit numeric code that gives a systematic classification of various products. It is a mandatory code for B2B and B2C tax invoices on the supply of goods and services. Taxpayers having a turnover of more than ₹ 5 crores in the preceding financial year should furnish a four-digit HSN code on every B2B invoice. The standard GST tax rate does not apply to them. There are approximately 5000 commodities divided into small groups arranged in a legal and logical structure. Its purpose is to bring a uniform classification of products and facilitate international trade. 

How to Add the HSN Code Over the GST Portal?

To add HSN code to the GST portal, follow these steps:

  • Visit the GST portal website and log in using your credentials – username and password  https://services.gst.gov.in/services/login
  • Click on ‘Services’, then ‘User Services’
  • Then click on ‘Search for HSN code
  • Select the option ‘Search by HSN’
  • You can enter the HSN code or name of the rate you are searching for in the ‘Search HSN Chapter by Code’
  • You will get a captcha to enter in the given box
  • Click on the ‘Search’ option and the product list will appear
  • Then, enter the appropriate HSN code and to your goods using the editor or import them into a CSV file.

What is the Importance of an HSN Code?

The primary function of the HSN code is to bring a systematic classification of products and make GST globally acceptable. However, you can also use them to gather data and remove the need to upload a detailed description of the products.

It further saves time and makes it convenient to file GST returns. A vendor must provide the HSN wise summary of sales in his GSTR-1.

What are the Services Provided in the GST Portal?

The GST Portal provides strong technical support to the taxpayers so that they do not have to visit the Tax Department for assessment or submission of their applications or returns. It allows communications such as responding to, approving or rejecting applications.

 It offers various services, including the following:

1. Registration – This option is present under the ‘Services’ tab that guides you to the new GST registration application. Any businessman crossing the threshold for GST registration must register online using this service. You can also make amendments to the registration of non-core fields.

2. Payments – To pay tax, you need to create a challan and make a payment. It contains five different options. Tracking your payments is possible too.

Further, you can also use the ‘Track Application Status’ facility for registration and refunds on the portal. If you have a grievance, you can use the ‘Grievance against Payment (GST PMT-07)’ option to submit your grievance. You can view the saved challans here. 

3. User Services – Under this tab, the services are – Search HSN Code, Holiday List, Cause List, Locate GST Practitioner (GSTP), Generate a User ID for an unregistered applicant, and Search BoE.

4. Refunds – Under this service, you can track your refund application status.

5. E-Way Bill System – This tab guides you to the e-way bill portal. It gives detailed information on the movement of goods taking place.

6. Track Application Status – This service provides you with an option to track the status of your registration and refund applications.

What are the Pre-Login Details of the GST Portal?

When you visit the GST homepage, you will see the GST portal contains the following sections:

  • Home
  • Services
  • GST Law
  • Downloads
  • Search Taxpayer
  • E-Way Bill System
  • Help

What are the Post-Login Details of the GST Portal?

After you complete the login process, you will get access to some new services on the home page. It is the page on the portal you will view post-login. After you (taxpayer) log in, you will view the ‘Dashboard’ section. You can check all the notices and orders, file GST returns, or edit the profile on this page. Also, under this section, the tax challan preparation occurs.

How to Track the Registration Application Status?

There are two ways to know the Registration Application status – before login and after login. 

Pre Login

To track the GST Registration Application status before login, follow the given steps:

  • Login to the portal and click on ‘Services’ 
  • Then click on ‘Registration’ and ‘Track Application Status’
  • Select ‘Registration’ from the drop-down list
  • Enter the ARN/ SRN as received on submitting the GST Registration on your email ID application. 
  • Fill the Captcha and click on ‘Search’.

Check the status of your GST registration application online in detail and take necessary action based on the ARN status.

Post Login

To track the GST Registration Application status (post-login), which includes new registration, amendments, cancellation, etc., follow the given steps:

  • Login to the portal and click on ‘Services’ 
  • Then click on ‘Registration’ and ‘Track Application Status’
  • Select ‘Registration’ from the drop-down list
  • You can know about the application status from the ARN or SRN or submission period
  • You will get a result based on the submission period. Click the ‘Download’ hyperlink to receive the acknowledgement. 

In the acknowledgement, you will be able to view your application status in detail. 

How to Log In to the Government Portal?

Logging into the GST portal is a smooth task as the steps are not very difficult to follow. Here are the steps for an easy login:

  • Go to www.gst.gov.in and click on ‘Login’ present in the right corner of the home page
  • Enter your credentials – username, password, and Captcha
  • Click on ‘Login’
  • You will now see the Dashboard and view options like ‘GST payable’, ‘Notices’, etc
  • For a new user, click on the Here written below ‘First Time Login’. Provide your Provisional ID, UIN, User ID, GSTIN, GSTP ID, and password, and click on ‘Login’.
