What is the Validity of the FSSAI License?
Recently, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed that blending of mustard oil with any other edible oil in India has been prohibited with effect from October 1, 2020. The edible oil manufacturers, who have the license for production of blended edible vegetable oil with mustard oil, have been directed to sell their existing stocks of mustard oil/mustard seeds as unblended cooking oils. All such licensees have been asked to modify their FSSAI licenses accordingly.


FSSAI is the authority formed by the Government of India to issue licenses to all food supplying and packaging companies. It ensures that the food that is manufactured and sold are of the best quality and free from any adulterants. It is important for any company running a food business to get this license. Along with the validity of the FSSAI License, we will look at other important aspects.

There are different types of food licenses issued by FSSAI; they are central license, state license, and basic registration license. FSSAI License Number

The FSSAI certificate contains an FSSAI license number. This is a 14 digit number that has to be there where you are running your business. This 14 digit number can be divided into the following  parts:

  • Section 1 – The first digital shows whether the business is registered or not.
  • For Section 2 – It is the state code, that is the place where the business is running.
  • Further, Section 3 – the 4th and 5th number indicates the year of registration of food business.
  •   Section 4 – 6th, 7th, and 8th number indicates the quantity of enrolling master.
  •   Section 5 – The 9th- 14th number is the license number.

FSSAI license is valid for a certain period, after which you need to go for the renewal of the FSSAI license.

Tenure of the Validity of FSSAI License

  1.   The registration is valid for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years
  2.   Before the license gets expired, you need to apply for the renewal of the license. This must be done 30 days before the date of the expiry of licenses. In case one fails to do so, then he/she needs to pay a penalty of Rs. 100 for each day.

The following will help you with the renewal of FSSAI license:

  1. To begin with, you need to fill the Form A in case you are going for Basic FSSAI Registration or Form B in case you are going for Central or State FSSAI registration.
  2. After successful completion of the form and its submission, the authorities will cross-check if the information is valid or not, and once they have successfully inspected the same, they will proceed with the application for renewal.
  3. Some officers might conduct the inquiry of the business.
  4. Thereafter, FSSAI can conduct a detail inspection of the premise where your business is running and whether or not you are adhering to define standards that mention by the government or not. They will prepare a report of the same and submit it to the authorities.
  5. The license is issued within 60 days

Documents for FSSAI License Renewal

As mentioned that there are three different types of FSSAI License, the documentation for their renewal also vary a bit. These are elucidated below:

State and Central FSSAI License:

  1.   Form B filled duly and signed
  2.   Photograph of the applicant or authorized signatory or director
  3.   Address proof of the directors
  4.   Layout plan of the unit
  5.   ID proof of the directors
  6.   Category of food in case you are a manufacturing company
  7.   NOC from the local body
  8.   Additionally, a number of equipment in case of a manufacturing company
  9.   Memorandum of Association and Article of Association
  10.   Proof of ownership of property or proof of authority like utility bills
  11.   A canceled cheque

  • Certificate from Ministry of commerce
  • Proof of turnover
  • Water report
  • IEC documents which are issued by the DGFT
