Update Import Export Code (IEC) Registration

Import Export Code (IEC) is an essential element if you are planning to kick-start your import or export business in India. IEC is a 10-digit identification code issued by the Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is issued to an importer or exporter from the regional office of DGFT.  IEC registration India is mandatory to run any import and export business in the country. The IEC registration can be applied online or offline.

The IEC registration process can be initiated online through the official website of the Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The manual or offline process of IEC registration involves the submission of the application and required documents to the nearest regional office o DGFT. Documents required for IEC modification

The following documents are required to update IEC modification. These documents should be uploaded along with the application form in case of online IEC modification.

  • Digital Photograph (3x3cms) of the applicant.
  • Digital signature of the applicant.
  • Copy of PAN card of the applicant.
  • Copy of Passport (first & last page)/Aadhar Card/Voter’s I-Card/ Driving Licence.
  • Sale deed in case business premise is self-owned, or Rental/Lease
  • An agreement, in case, the office is rented/ leased, or the latest electricity/telephone bill.
  • Bank Certificate as per ANF 2A(I) or a cancelled Cheque bearing preprinted name of the applicant and A/C No.
  • Copy of the Partnership Deed(for a partnership firm)
  • Certificate of incorporation as issued by the RoC (if any)
  • Registration Certificate of the Society / Copy of the Trust Deed (in case of registered society or trust)
  • Copy of the original IEC certificate

Procedure involved in IEC modification

The IEC modification may require legal help if you are not well-versed with the process. The legal consultant can take care of the updation of Import Export Code IEC registration online by preparing and filing the application to the regional office of DGFT. However, an individual may follow the below-mentioned steps to make the changes himself.

  • Open the official website of DGFT
  • Click on the “Services” tab and select IEC from the drop-down list.
  • Click on “IEC Application”
  • As the new page opens up, enter your PAN no. and click on search
  • A new page opens up. Enter your name, date of birth ad captcha. Click on submit. 
  • A new Dialogue box opens up. Select the option “Modify e-IEC”. Enter the mobile number, e-mail id and captcha. Click on “Generate OTP” button.
  •  You will receive an email and an OTP in the given mobile number.
  • As you enter the OTP and proceed to the next step, you will find the prefilled IEC application form.
  • Make suitable changes in the required fields.
  • You have to upload the required documents and then proceed to the payment.
  • Make the payment through online transaction.

Once the changes are approved, you will receive an email of the modified IEC certificate within 2-3 working days.

If a legal consultant or online expert is appointed to do this task on your behalf, the consultant collects all the required document, prepares the IEC application for modification, submits the application and finally sends the IEC certificate to you. You do not need to worry or make any effort to get the modifications done. 

When is an updation of IEC registration required? 

As IEC is required for customs clearance, export subsidy, foreign exchange, the importer or exporter should update the IEC registration whenever needed. IEC modification is required under the following circumstances.

Error or wrong information

It is the voluntary modification made by the IEC certificate holder in case any error or incorrect information is observed in the certificate. Change in the business address

If the exporter or importer has changed his business premise, he should immediately update the revised business update through the online modification process of IEC registration India. Change in the company name

In case of any change in the name of the business firm, the IEC certificate should be updated by filing an online application. The required document should be attached to the application form.

Addition or exclusion of partner/ director

If the business firm has decided to include or exclude a partner or director, IEC certificate should be updated with the change. In case of addition of partner or director, the identity proof along with the digital signature of the person should be attached to the IEC modification application form. The partnership deed should also be uploaded along with the application.

Statutory modification

As per the import-export laws, the importer or exporter should update the IEC at least once a year ever under normal circumstances.

Any change required in the IEC certificate should be intimated as early as possible. In the case of non-intimation of the changes to the DGFT, pecuniary action may be taken. The consequence can be as harsh as the cancellation of the Import Export Code.
