What is a passport?

A passport is an important document given by the Government of a country. The passport as a document allows the citizen of a country to travel abroad without any obstacles. The passport ensures a citizen’s smooth immigration while traveling to a foreign country. However, the passport serves as an authentic proof, official identity, and address proof that allows the citizen to avail of Government services. The Ministry of External Affairs, Passport and Visa Division’s Consular is entitled with the responsibilities of administering passport services and issuing it to the citizens of India. The article further discusses Tatkal Passports and the requirements related to it.

Types of Passport Application

The citizen can apply for the passport application based on requirement and urgency. The types of passport application are as follows:

  • Normal Passport Application
  • Tatkal Passport Application

Regular Passport Applications, filed when the applicant requires a standard application process and is not under a time limit. However, the application for the passport based on urgency comes under Tatkal Passport Application. Moreover, the applicants need to pay an additional charge to avail of this service. 

Eligibility for Tatkal passport

The jurisdiction of the Passport Office gives the final decision on the issuance of a passport under the ‘Tatkal Scheme’. Additionally, the reasons stated by the applicants for the tatkal passport would be reviewed before the final decision. Further, it must be noted that citizens falling under any of the following categories cannot apply or reapply for a passport under the Tatkal Scheme.

  • Individuals who have undergone a significant Name Change.
  • Additionally, citizens born to Indian parents (Indian descent) outside India.
  • Moreover, citizens originating from Nagaland but reside outside Nagaland.
  • Residents of Jammu and Kashmir
  • Residents of Nagaland
  • Moreover, citizens originating from Nagaland but reside outside Nagaland.
  • Minors residing within Nagaland
  • Additionally, Short passport validity renewal
  • Likewise, children adopted by Indian and Foreign parents.
  • Similarly, Lost or stolen passports
  • Minor children who have single parents.
  • Further, applicants who have been deported to India from any other country.
  • Additionally, Indian citizens who have been granted citizenship status based on their naturalization or registration.
  • Changes in personal credentials such as one’s signature.
  • Similarly, passports damaged beyond the point of recognition.
  • Additionally, significant changes in gender or appearance.
  • Applicants who have been repatriated from another country at the Government’s cost.

What all documents are required to apply for a tatkal passport?

The following documents are required to apply for a Tatkal Passport:

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Election card (Voter Id)
  3. Ration card
  4. Additionally, PAN Card (Issued by The Income Tax Department)
  5. Pension Documents
  6. Property Documents
  7. Likewise, Driver’s License
  8. Bank Passbook
  9. Gas Connection Bill
  10. Arms License
  11. Service Photo Identity Card
  12. Moreover, Identity Cards of Freedom Fighters.
  13. Railway Photo Identity Card
  14. Additionally, Certificate of Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes/ Other Backward Castes
  15. Further, a student’s Identity Card from a recognized Institution.

What is the duration of availing a Tatkal passport?

The Tatkal passport application goes under a quick verification and processing as compared to the standard passport application. Additionally, Passports are majorly issued and dispatched to the applicant within 1-3 days from the date of application. Further, the day on which the applicant submits the documents and paperwork at the known Passport Seva Kendra has as the Date of Application.

Further, in case the police verification is required, the passport would be dispatched to the concerned individual on the third day. Additionally, the passport would be sent without waiting for the report of the police verification.

Similarly, if Police verification is not required, the tatkal passport would be dispatched to the applicant within one day without including the date of application.

The fee structure for a tatkal passport under various schemes are:

NOTE: Further, the amount of INR 500 would be applicable to obtain a Police Clearance Certificate.

Fresh Passport Application:

The application fee to get a brand new passport are as follows:

For individuals below the age of 15

Passport consisting of 60 pages Not Available (Only passports with 36 pages will be approved)

 

For individuals between the age of 15 and 18 who require a passport for five years or until they turn 18

Passport consisting of 60 pages Not Available (Only passports with 36 pages will be approved)

 

For individuals of the age of 15 and above

Passport consisting of 36 pages INR 3,500

NOTE: A rebate of 10% on the basic passport fee will be applicable for individuals  of 8 years or below and senior citizens of 60 years and above

Post-Expiry Passport Renewal:

The fee structure is as follows:

For individuals below the age of 15

Passport consisting of 60 pages Not Available (Only passports with 36 pages will be approved)

 

NOTE: In case, the individual has damaged or lost the passport, which had not expired, the re-issuance fee is Rs. INR 5,000
