What is a Digital Signature Certificate?

Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is used to make a signature and encrypt the documents online. Nowadays, the majority of the work is done online. It will become difficult to download every document and then sign, which would be scanned to send to the other party. It becomes a tedious task for every deal. However, now, this procedure has come to a halt with the help of the digital signature certificate.

The Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is used to verify and authorize the document. The presence of DSC in a document also authenticates that the data given is untamper and unalter.

Who all needs a DSC?

All the major individual entities who are working as professionals, organizations, and companies may hold a digital signature certificate. However, it is mandatory for corporate organizations earning more than Rs.60 lakhs to have a digital signature certificate while they deal with the Registrar of Companies (ROC) or Ministry of Corporate Affairs(MOC). These government organizations regard DSC as a valid legal document.

What are the 3 classes of DSC?

Firstly, DSC is available in three types of classes, which fulfills the requirement of the DSC holder. Likewise, as per their usage, they have been assigned under the respective category.

Class 1

People operating as an individual entity may hold a class 1 certificate. Moreover, the certificate consists of their details and email address, which shows that their data has been registered under the database of a certifying authority.

Class 2

The directors or the head authorities of the company apply for DSC as it will be used for e-filing with ROC. Additionally, the ones who do e-filling of their income tax are also required to hold a DSC.

Class 3

This certificate is mandatory for the entities who often go for e-auction, e-bidding, e-tender participation, etc. Holding a DSC is necessary for the participants as it will authenticate the entity and clear the doubt of any forgery.

It is of paramount importance to note that only class 2 and class 3 certificates will be used for e-filing on the portal of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MOC). Since DSC ensures authenticity and security, it is used by the MOC to identify the authorized signatory of the company.

Where is DSC required?

A Digital Signature Certificate is required to validate your identity electronically. On making online transactions, the details of the DSC holder will be held confidential within the company. With the encrypt type certificate, the information shared with the company remains under high security, which ensures absolute privacy.

With the help of the DSC, the holder of the certificate can assure the receiving party that the data in the file has not been altered, which will also help to verify the identity of the entity.
