Caste Certificate: How to obtain a Caste Certificate in Tamil Nadu?

The Indian Constitution categorises some people, belonging to a certain caste or community and endows them with certain benefits. In order to avail different government-run schemes and benefits, a person belonging to a certain caste or community shall be able to produce a documentary proof to support his claim. Therefore, an ST certificate is nothing more but a  documentary proof confirming the caste of a person and enabling them to be eligible for any scheme or benefit entitled for. The rationale of having these caste certificates is to uplift the backward castes and communities- such as the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes or Other Backward Castes. It was in the year 1988, that the state of Tamil Nadu initiated the system of obtaining a permanent caste or community certificate. 

What are the documents required to obtain the certificate in Tamil Nadu?

In order to obtain a Tamil Nadu Caste Certificate, the following documents are required to obtain a certificate, in original as well as in copies:

  • Completely filled in the application form
  • Ration card
  • School leaving certificate or a copy of the transfer certificate
  • certificates of the parents
  • School certificates of parents

Process for Obtaining SC/ST Certificate

The procedure to get a Certificate in Tamil Nadu differs depending on the categories BC/SC/ST and OBC.

Here is the procedure for obtaining certificate for BC/SC/ST categories:

Step 1: Log on to the official website of the Government of Tamil Nadu official website using the link http://www.tn.gov.in/

 Step 2: After logging on to the official website, search for the Form sections, on the right side of the webpage. A list of forms and related services will be displayed. Click More under the forms section on the webpage. On the Search tab, type Community certificate.

Step 3: Once the search results appear on the screen, then download the community certificate by clicking on the ‘community certificate’ link. You will be redirected to a portal where you need to mention the following details of the applicant: 

  1. Applicant’s name
  2. Father/ Husband’s name
  3. Sex (Female/male)
  4. Full residential address
  5. Ration card number of the applicant
  6. Details of community certificate of parents
  7. Details of school certificates of parents
  8. Date of application

Step 4: After completing the form and signing it, the applicant can check if the documents and the information are entered correctly. 

Step 5: The completed and signed form, along with the documents, should be submitted to the respective revenue talk office. Once the application form is submitted, it will be processed at the end of the authorities and then if all the details are correctly verified, the Community Certificate will be sent into the application within 30 days.

Procedure for OBC Categories

The following are the steps involved in the Certificate application process for OBC categories:

Step 1: Log on to the online portal of the e-Sevai web portal using the link, using the link https://www.tnesevai.tn.gov.in/  

Step 2: In the next step, click on the Citizen Login tab and enter the registered and correct login username and password.

Step 3: On the e-Sevai dashboard, click on Services option on the left-hand side of the screen. Under the list of Department Wise services, click the Revenue Department option.

Step 4: Next step is to click on REV-115 Other Backward Classes (OBC) Certificate link. You will be redirected to the Tamil Nadu e-District Web Portal. After the certificate appears, continue on the Proceed button.

Step 5: On the Applicant Search form, fill in the following details of the applicant. 

  • CAN number
  • Name
  • Name of the applicant’s father
  • Mobile number 
  • E-mail id
  • Date of Birth

Step 6: In order to proceed with the registration for CAN, click on the button Register CAN. Enter the details on the form and click Register to submit the CAN form and proceed further.

Step 7: If you want to edit the details, click  Edit CAN details, else go to the next step. 

Step 8: Accept the Declarations and click on the Submit button.

Step 9: Attach all the required documents in the prescribed file size and file type.

Step 10: The payments page will open, showing the total fees on the screen. Click on Confirm Payment. Then, click on Print Receipt to download or print the receipt.
