PAN Card for Students

The Permanent Account Number, better known as the PAN is one of India’s most important official documents. The PAN card helps eligible taxpayers file their IT returns on time, while also acting as a valid identity proof across the country. Hence, all income-earning individuals and business entities in India must possess a PAN card. Additionally, even NRIs, foreign nationals and non-individuals can apply for and obtain a PAN card in India. The Indian government has also encouraged Indian students to apply for a PAN card as it acts as a valid proof of identity. The PAN Card will also come in handy when students apply for education loans within the country or wish to go abroad for their studies. In this article, we will take a look at PAN cards for students and how to apply for the same.

How can Students Apply for a PAN Card Online?

A PAN card is a document that both adults and minors can apply for and obtain quickly in India. The PAN card is useful for students as it acts as an alternative identity proof or school ID card. The Income Tax Department is responsible for issuing PAN cards in India under the guidance of the Central Board of Direct Tax. Students can approach either the NSDL or UTIITSL website to apply for a new PAN card. Here’s a quick look at how students can apply for a PAN Card online.

  1. First and foremost, students should visit either the NSDL or UTIITSL website through the following links provided here and here.
  2. New applicants will have to opt for Form 49A and fill it carefully.
  3. After providing the required information, students will have to review the information and make sure all the details provided are accurate.
  4. They will then have to pay the required processing fees to complete the application process. Applications which have an Indian address will require a processing fee of INR 110, whereas those that have a foreign communication address will cost INR 1020.
  5. On successful application, the system will generate an acknowledgement slip containing a 15-digit acknowledgement number which the applicant can use to track their application.
  6. Next, they will have to take a print out of this Form, affix two recent passport-sized photos on the Form and attach the required supporting documents.
  7. They will then have to send this envelope to the Income Tax Department, whose official will then verify the documents provided and issue a PAN card if they are satisfied.

The applicant must ensure that the envelope reaches the concerned office at least 15 days after filing an application online. Officials from the It office and CBDT will then review the application before allotting a PAN number. Students can also update the information on their PAN card through a similar process. In this case, they will have to opt for the Changes or Correction in PAN details service and fill the required form. This comes in handy in case of a misprinted address, name, gender or DoB on their newly printed PAN card.
