Important Points to be Noted Earlier, the income tax department had extended the last date of payment of self-assessment tax, in case of tax liability up to Rupees 1 lakh till 20 November 2020. After the 2018 Supreme Court verdict on the constitutional validity of Aadhaar, it is mandatory to link the 12-digit identification number with a PAN card for filing income tax returns (ITR). Even if you are applying for a new PAN card, quoting your Aadhaar number is mandatory. Additionally, for persons who are applying for a fresh PAN card, the interlinking is done automatically during the application stage. The existing PAN cardholders must compulsorily link the Aadhaar with the PAN card within the last date. You may also visit https://www.utiitsl.com/ (or) https://www.egov-nsdl.co.in/ to link your PAN and Aadhaar card. Once the deadline to link PAN and Aadhaar is over, the income tax department will start treating all unlinked PAN cards as ‘inoperative’. This means that your PAN card will not be treated as being in use and you will also not be able to file income tax returns (ITR). Hence, the previous deadline for linking PAN cards with Aadhaar was 30 June 2020. Moreover, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had issued a notification in June 2020 for extending the deadline for linking the Permanent Account Number (PAN) card with the Aadhaar card.
