You can now pay your income tax online using Challan 280. You don't need to rely on your accountant to pay your income tax. Generally, employers pay income tax on behalf of their employees since most salaried employees don't pay additional taxes. The form requires you to fill in the details. Your income tax can be paid online or offline at a bank using the duly completed form.

What is Challan 280?

Taxpayers must file Challan 280 to pay their taxes online. Download this form from the Income Tax website. You can submit this form online or offline. A Challan 280 is used for tax payments such as advance tax, self-assessment tax, regular income tax, surcharge, and Dividend Distribution Tax. Here’s a step-by-step guide to processing challan 280.

Downloading Challan 280

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to download the Challan 280:

  • Step 1: Go to the official I-T website – www.incometaxindia.gov.in.
  • Step 2: Click the ‘Forms / Downloads’ option on the Homepage in the top menu.
  • Step 3: Select the ‘Challans’ option from dropbox.
  • Step 4: You will be redirected to a new page where a list of all downloadable challans will be displayed. Select ‘ITNS-280’ from the list.
  • Step 5: You will have two options. You can download the form in PDF format to manually fill in the offline mode of payment. Or you can fill out the form online and pay through net banking through the portal. The user can select either of the formats as per preference.

Making Tax Payment With Challan 280

Tax payments can be made either online or offline at the taxpayer’s convenience. Let us look at how the two differ in terms of process.

Offline filing of Challan 280

For offline payments, taxpayers must download the Challan 280 form from the income tax portal and manually fill in the required information. Detailed information is provided, and the completed Challan is taken to any designated bank branch. Taxes are payable at the designated counter when the Challan is submitted. Checks, cash, and demand drafts are accepted. Proof of tax payment would be a stamped counterfoil.

Online: The online income tax payment using Challan 280 has a specific procedure for the payment of taxes, which is as follows:

  • Step 1: Visit the NSDL website – https://www.tin-nsdl.com/
  • Step 2: On the main page, select the ‘Services’ option and then select the ‘e-payment: Pay Taxes Online’ option from dropbox. To access the online payment page directly, choose the ‘Click to pay Tax online’ link on the main page’s right side.
  • Step 3: Either way, the web page will be redirected to the e-payment page, where you must select ‘Challan No./ITNS 280’ from the given list of options and click ‘Proceed’.
  • Step 4: On the new page, you will have to provide details such as PAN, Assessment year, etc., in the form.
  • Step 5: You can choose ‘(0021) Income Tax (Other Companies)’ if you are an individual paying IT. Choose ‘(0020) Corporation Tax (Companies)’ if you are paying corporation tax for a company.
  • Step 6: Now select the appropriate ‘Type of payment’ from the list provided that includes; (100) Advance Tax, (102) Surtax, (106) Tax on Distributed Profit, (107) Tax on Distributed Income., (300) Self-Assessment Tax, and (400) Tax on Regular Assessment.
  • Step 7: Next, choose the convenient mode of payment. It could either be through ‘Netbanking’ or a ‘Debit Card’. Then choose the bank name from the drop-down list.
  • Step 8: Enter the PAN details and the Assessment Year from dropbox. The relevant assessment year from 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019 is 2019-20.
  • Step 9: At the end, you will have to fill in the details of your Address, district, state, contact details, etc.
  • Step 10: As the final step, you can press ‘Proceed’ after entering the Captcha Code, redirecting the page to the e-payment gateway, where you can carry on with the regular online payment procedure.

Proof Of Tax Payment

In this case, the challan and tax dues are deposited at a designated bank branch. Proof of tax payment will be a stamped counterfoil. The receipt will be displayed in printable format if the payment is made online. Payment proofs will include a CIN (Challan Identification Number), payment date, tax amount, etc. CIN consists of a challan serial number, the bank branch’s 7-digit BSR code (Basic Statistical Returns) and the date of remittance. The CIN can be useful for future references, especially when filing an ITR.

Challan Amendments

An Assessee may request changes in the Challan with both methods. If the Challan uses either method., you can approach the same bank branch with the CIN and request the amendment. The banks get about seven days from the day of remittance to make the challan changes for information like TAN and PAN, total amount, etc. Similarly, the banks get around three months to change fields like Challan deposit date, nature of payment, etc. If the payment has been made online, the assessee must approach the assessing officer with the CIN. The assessing officer will have access to a system called OLTAS, which allows the officer to make the necessary amendments.

Verification of Challan Tax Payment

Verification of a Challan confirms the status of the Challan. It can be verified either by the CIN-based view or the TAN-based view. The CIN view provides details like the CIN, BSR code, the serial number of the Challan, etc., to track the status of the challans. The TAN view gives details of Tax deductive TAN view shows details such as the tax deduction and collection number, Challan tender date, etc., needed to view the CIN.yers can view the refund status ten days after their refund has been sent to the banker by the officer.
