What is IEC Code?

The Import-Export Code is issued to the proprietors, companies or entities for shipment and other transactional purposes. The code issue is a 10 digit number that is issued to the applicant after verification of the documents and other processing. The code issued is essential to track and manage shipments. 

To obtain IEC, the applicants need not have to submit the form and the document manually. In August 2018, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) introduced several changes regarding the process of application for IEC. The IEC can be obtained via an online platform. For the ones seeking to make amendments, their IEC certificate can also be made via the online portal.  

Conditions of amendment in IEC

There are certain conditions under which the IEC certificate holders can apply to amend IEC. These conditions are as follows:

  • Statutory Modification

The IEC certificate can be amended under normal circumstances once in a year as per the guidelines issued by the import-export laws.

  • Voluntary Modification

In case any error surfaces in the certificate or any changes are required to be made in the Import-Export code then, the certificate can be modified immediately.

  • Business Address Modification

If the business address has changed then the same has to be reported and modified in the IEC certificate. It can be done through the online IEC modification process.

  • Change in the Company name

If the company or the entity has changed its name then, it has to be updated in the IEC certificate.  

  • Partners addition or deletion

If in case, the partners or the directors of the company change then, it has to be updated in the IEC certificate. 

What if the changes are not updated in the IEC certificate?

All sorts of the amendment are required to be updated in the certificate. Any kind of negligence reported later on can put the company or the entity in trouble. If the proprietors/company/entities do not update their amendments in the certificate then, DGFT holds the authority to cancel their Import-Export code. In some cases, such negligence can lead the company heads to pay a hefty amount and also face pecuniary action for the same. 

Documents required for the Amendment

To update the amendments in the IEC certificate the applicant is required to submit some relevant documents. The list of the documents required are as follows:

  • IEC certificate
  • Documents to proof the changes
  • Description of modification

Process of Updating Import-Emport Code details

If any discrepancy surfaces in the IEC certificate, or if any change occurs in the company/ entity/ proprietorship then, the changes have to be updated in the IEC certificate. To make the amendments reflect on the certificate then the following steps have to be adopted:

  • Visit the DGFT online portal
  • Enter the PAN Number on the DGFT portal 

  • Enter the PAN number and other details such as the name of the company, date of birth, file number and file date. 


  • Click on the Modify e-IEC option and enter a mobile number and valid email address. Also, enter the captcha code and tab on the “generate token” button

  • 20 digit ECOM number will be received on the number
  • On the left side of the screen, amendment options will appear. The user has to make amendments in the required field by submitting valid documents to prove the changes. 

How to modify e-IEC for changes in Master details

To make changes for the Master details proceed with the following steps:

  • On clicking the master details option for amendment a screen will pop up, which will be similar as shown below.

  • After making necessary changes in the required field click on the edit button as shown below.

  • After making the required changes the user has to select and update branch or director details even if there is no change to be made in that section. If the user does not subscribe to what it has been mentioned then, the screen will display success along with another message as shown below

Likewise, other details can be modified by clicking on the respective options. 

How to Attach Documents 

To submit supporting documents, click on the attachment option on the menu. The following screen is a sample of the attachment option.

Select the document and make sure that the file size and its type matches the requirement. When the document gets successfully uploaded, then a message will be displayed, which be similar to the following 

Payment Procedure

After successfully changing the details in the required fields, the payment has to be made. The following steps are required to make payment of the IEC modification online

  • Under the licensing scheme menu, there is a pay online option. Click on the button to make the payment. The screen of payment will appear similar as given below.

  • After clicking on the submit button, then the payment confirmation screen will be displayed as shown below

 Press the proceed button to go to the payment portal site. 

  • Next, a payment interface screen will be displayed to the user. Click on varying options displayed on the screen as given below.

  • After filling the details click on make payment option and wait for the following screen to pop up.

  • Once the OTP is generated then enter it the box given in the screen similar to the following:

  • On clicking the submit button, the payment status will be intimated to the user. The transaction page will be somewhat similar to the following:

However, in case the transaction is unsuccessful then the following kind of message will be displayed on the screen

A similar process has to be used for other payment methods via online mode for IEC modification form online.

On successful completion of the procedure the following screen will be displayed, where an option to generate an Import-Export Code certificate will be present. 

On pressing the ‘Generate IEC certificate’, an e-IEC certificate will be displayed on the screen of the user, which can be printed. The IEC certificate will be similar to the following sample certificate.

The user must keep his email ID and mobile number active while filling the form as the status of the IEC application will be intimated to the user from time to time.
