Is it compulsory to renew a driving license in India?

As per the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, users must mandatory renew the driving license once it expires. Individuals can submit a form for renewal of the driving license either physically or through their State Motor Vehicle Department’s website. Since the Act makes it compulsory for all individuals driving in India to have a valid DL, an expired license must be renewed immediately. 

After expiry, a driving license will remain valid for only 30 days. The applicant must renew the driving license before this period ends to retain their right to drive legally in India. In case you renew the driving license within one year of expiry, you will have to pay a penalty of around INR 200, which varies from state to state. Also, as per Section 177 of the Act, anyone driving without a valid DL may be fined and even imprisoned for a maximum of three months depending on the severity of their misdemeanour. If the individual does not renew the driving license within five years after expiry, they will have to obtain a new license. 

Validity and fees for renewing driving license

The validity of the renewed driving license will be as given below;

  • Transport vehicle DLs will remain valid for three years.
  • Non-transport vehicle licenses will be valid for five years. 

The fees for the renewal of a driving license depends on the type of license you need and the state in which you are applying. If you wish to obtain the license in the form of a book, then the fees will be as given below:

  • Application filed within the specified grace period – INR 200
  • Application filed after the specified grace period – INR 1000 + Processing fees required

In case you opt for the license in the Smart card form, then the fees are as follows;

  • Application filed within the specified grace period – INR 400
  • Application filed after the specified grace period – INR 1000 + Processing fees required

If you wish to update your address on the driving license, you will need to pay an extra fee of INR 200.

Documents Required to renew the Driving License

Non-Transport License renewal requires the following documents;

  • Application form for renewal via Form 9
  • Declaration of fitness through Form 1 and Form 1A
  • Expired driving license
  • Proof of DoB or age
  • Proof of address
  • Three passport size photographs

When applying for a heavy motor vehicle transport license renewal, applicants will have to submit a driver refreshing certificate along with the documents listed above.

How to renew the driving license online in India

2. From the homepage, navigate to the tab titled Online Services and choose the Driving License Related Services option.

3. Click on Apply Online and choose Driving License from the drop-down menu for Services.

4. This will take you to a new page, wherein you will have to provide basic details, such as DoB, full name, and DL number.

5. After submitting the form, you must visit the RTO to verify all your documents. After successful verification, you will receive the renewed license either on the same day or within 30 days of applying, depending on the nature of the license.

How to renew the driving license offline in India

  1. Applicants will have to collect the required form for renewal of the driving license from their nearest RTO. Individuals may also download a copy of the same from the RTO’s official website.
  2. After duly filling and authoring them, they must submit the forms along with the required supporting documents at the regional transport office nearest to your place of stay.
  3. Private license holders will receive their renewed license on the same day. However, if you are applying for a commercial license, then the application must undergo a verification process. Applicants can expect to receive their renewed license within 30 days.

The form for renewal of a driving license is Form 9, which acts as KYC documents for the RTO. It contains essential details regarding the applicant’s driving license and their contact details. Users may download the form online or request the same from their nearest RTO office. If you have changed your state, then you will also need to submit a NOC from the RTO who issued you the original DL.
