PAN-Aadhaar linking has become a mandatory procedure for everyone. If you still haven’t completed the linking procedure, make sure you do it before the deadline. 31st March 2020 is the new extended deadline.

The due date has been extended for the 3rd time. Earlier, it was extended from 30 September 2019 to 30th December 2019. Failing to link your Aadhaar with PAN card will make your PAN inoperative, which will create difficulties in filing IT returns.

According to Section 139AA(2) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, every person who has valid PAN card as on the 1st July 2017, and who is eligible to possess Aadhaar Number, must intimate to the tax authority, as prescribed, on or before the due date mentioned by the Central government authority.

There are two different methods to link Aadhaar number with Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card:

  1. Online Linking through Income Tax e-filing website
  2. By sending SMS

Online Linking through Income Tax e-filing website

The online process of linking can be carried out by two means:
  1. Without logging in to IT e-filing website
  2. With logging in to IT e-filing website

Step 1:

Visit the income tax e-filing portal

Step 2:

Select the hyperlink “Link Aadhaar” listed in the Quick Links Column given the left side.

Step 3:

Upon clicking the link, you will be redirected to a new page where you will be asked to enter the following details.

  1. PAN
  2. Aadhaar Number
  3. Name as per Aadhaar
  4. Tick the checkbox “I agree to validate my Aadhaar details with UIDAI”

Enter the Captcha Code as given in the image or you can use the OTP option if you are visually challenged.

Next, click on the tab “Link Aadhaar.”

Once this is done, you will see a pop-up message to your information that you have successfully linked both PAN and Aadhaar together.

NOTE:
  1. Name, Gender and Date of Birth as per PAN will be validated against your Aadhar Details.
  2. Do make sure Name as per Aadhaar and Aadhaar Number is exactly the same as printed on your Aadhaar card.

UIDAI withdrew authorization of the partial matching of demographic data authentification with effect from 1.12.2017. It means every demographic authentication is allowed only for the exact match of Name, address and other parameters as in Aadhaar.

With logging in to IT e-filing website

Step 1:

Register yourself at the IT e-filing portal, if you don’t have a registered user ID and password at the Income-tax e-filing portal.

Now, log in to the portal with the valid user ID, Password and Date of Birth.

Step 2:

Under profile settings, click on the tab “Link Aadhaar” listed in the drop-down menu.link your Aadhaar card with your PAN card online

Step 3:

Upon clicking that you will be redirected to the page where you need to enter the following details:

  1. Name as per PAN
  2. Date of Birth as per PAN
  3. Gender as per PAN
  4. Aadhaar Number
  5. CAPTCHA Code

After entering all the above-mentioned details, click the tab “Link Aadhaar”.

Once this is done, you will see a pop-up message to your information that you have successfully linked both PAN and Aadhaar together.

Linking By sending SMS:

This is a very simple process to link your PAN and Aadhaar Number. The taxpayers, just need to an SMS to 567678 or 561561 in a prescribed format.

Here is how you need to send SMS:
