How To Link Your Aadhaar Card To Your PAN Card?

In this article we shall take a look at how to link your Aadhaar Card to your PAN card and the steps involved in detail

Linking the Aadhaar card to the PAN has become mandatory if you wish to file your Income-tax returns. Your IT returns will fail to be processed in case such a link has not been made. Furthermore, if you want to make any bank transaction exceeding INR 50,000, you will need to have your PAN linked to your Aadhaar card. The process for linking the Aadhaar to the PAN is a simple process that occurs online. The government has also provided multiple methods to accomplish the same to make it easier for people to achieve linking. The deadline for linking the PAN and Aadhaar has also been extended to 31st March 2021. Here’s a look at everything you need to know about how to link your Aadhaar card and PAN card.

PAN-Aadhaar Linking Online

Here’s a quick look at what users need to do to link their PAN and Aadhaar through the e-Filing website.

  1. First and foremost, users must visit the Income Tax e-Filing website.
  2. From the homepage, users should go to the Quick Links section and choose the Link Aadhaar option.
  3. Next, users should enter their PAN and Aadhaar numbers.
  4. Also, you will have to mention your full name, as mentioned in the Aadhaar. Make sure the names on both documents are the same.
  5. If your Aadhaar card only has your Date of Birth, do tick the corresponding field on the website.
  6. Next, tick the declaration wherein you agree to Validate your Aadhaar details with the UIDAI.
  7. Enter the CAPTCHA code to complete the verification and click on Link Aadhaar.
  8. The visually impaired individuals have the option of requesting an OTP rather than entering the CAPTCHA code for verification. The option for the same is available right below, and such users should tick the option to get the OTP delivered to their registered mobile number.

PAN-Aadhaar Linking Through SMS

Send the following SMS in the exact format to either 56161 or 567678: UIDPAN<<12-Digit Aadhaar>>< <10-Digit PAN Number>>
Remember to send the SMS from your registered mobile number.

For instance, if your Aadhaar number is 012345678901 and your PAN card number is ZXYVU9876T, then type UIDPAN 012345678901 ZXYVU9876T.

Correction Facility For PAN-Aadhaar Linking

The linking of the Aadhaar and PAN will become successful only if both documents have the same details. If there are mismatches, spelling mistakes or errors of any sort, then the request for the linking will be rejected. In such cases, you will first have to correct the respective documents before attempting to link them. To make corrections to your Aadhaar, visit your nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre and duly fill out the Correction form. To make changes to your PAN, please visit the NSDL portal and follow the steps given below;

  1. Visit the official NSDL website
  2. From the drop-down menu, go to the Changes or Correction in PAN data option
  3. Choose the appropriate category and fill in the required details
  4. Submit the required duly self-attested digital documents and upload the same
  5. Make the processing fee payment and submit the Form for the same online after Aadhaar e-KYC
  6. The PAN with your updated details will be sent to your residential address.
  7. Once you receive the updated PAN, you can proceed with the linking.

What to Do If PAN-Aadhaar Linking Fails

All citizens have been asked to link their Aadhaar and PAN by 31st March 2021. Failure to do so will result in the deactivation of their PAN cards. As a result, they will not be able to file their IT returns with the Income Tax Department. Before attempting to link the PAN and Aadhaar, users should ensure that both documents match with regard to details. Now that you know what to do if your name is spelt wrongly in your PAN let us take a look at how to correct your Aadhaar.

  1. Visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre
  2. Make sure you carry a duly self-attested copy of your ID proof
  3. Request for and fill an Aadhaar Enrolment Form or Aadhaar Correction Form
  4. Submit the form along with the required supporting documents
  5. The officials will now provide an acknowledgement with an update request number, which you can use to track the status of your Aadhaar update request.

Checking the Status of PAN-Aadhaar Linking

  1. Visit the official e-Filing Income website
  2. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.
  3. Click on the ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’ option.
  4. You will now be able to see your Aadhaar-PAN link status.

Importance of Linking PAN Card with Aadhaar

PAN Cards which have not been linked even after the deadline of 31st March 2023 will be deactivated. As a consequence you will not be able to file your IT returns if your PAN gets deactivated and might end up paying a hefty fine for the default on the due date.

Besides, linking the Aadhaar and PAN will prevent the issue of multiple PAN cards to the same individual.

Conclusion

The entire idea of Aadhaar is to get rid of multiple identification cards for different purposes and have one single identity card that can be presented for all purposes. This is somewhat similar to the Social Security Number system in the USA. So it is in the best interest of all to ensure that the Aadhaar is linked to all other government documents so you do not need to maintain a bulky folder with multiple government ids with repetitive information.
