How to Generate GST e-way Bills on e-way bill Portal?

An electronic bill, or an e-way bill, as it is generally known, is generally a proof or certificate for the transportation of goods from one place to another. For any transportation or movement of goods worth more than Rs.50,000 in value, it is necessary to have a registered e-way bill. An e-way bill can be generated by the person who is the owner of the goods via an online portal facility available.

The owner of the goods must be a taxable person registered under GST or a transporter or a person not registered under GST using the GST Common Portal. On the generation of an e-way bill, there is the generation of a unique e-way bill number, called the EBN. This EBN is shared between the supplier, recipient and the transporter, to coordinate the movement of goods, its dispatch and delivery. Here is a step by step process to generate the GST E-way Bill on the e-way portal. To be able to use the portal, one requires a valid GST registration and transporter registration.

Step 1:

Firstly, go on to the e-way bill log in to the GST e-way bill generation portal by following the link given here: https://ewaybill.nic.in/ 

Step 2:

After logging in, you will be redirected to the home page, where you need to enter into the e-way bill login system details to enter the platform and proceed with it. It should look like the screenshot produced below.

Step 3:

Once you log in successfully, you will be redirected to the main page dashboard. Once you are here, the next step is to click on the “Generate New” option from the eWay bill. It is produced here in the screenshot.

Step 4:

Once you click on the ‘Generate New’ button, a form for a new e-way bill generation will appear. In this form, one needs to fill in the details asked for, in the said form. Please note: If you are a supplier of goods, then select outward. If you are a recipient, select inward. Supplier or recipient, as the case may be, enter all details along with mentioning your GSTIN. When a registered GSTIN is entered in the field provided on the form, other details get pulled into the empty fields. Before proceeding to the next step kindly double-check the details.

STEP 5:

Once you have entered the details, scroll down to the second half of the page. This part will ask you for the following information:

  • Product Name of the goods and Description of the goods must be filled in completely and correctly by the applicant.
  • HSN Code for the Product has to be entered by the applicant. To find the right HSN code, click to the link given here: https://www.indiafilings.com/find-gst-rate
  • IGST or CGST Rates applicable should be entered. IGST would be applicable for inter-state transport and SGST / CGST for intra-state transport.
  • The approximate planned distance of transport to determine the validity of the e waybill.
Step 6:

Once you are done filling in all the details, simply click on the “SUBMIT” button to generate the eWay bill. The eWay bill gets displayed which contains the eWay Bill number. And the QR Code that contains all the details in the digital format. The printed copy of the bill should be provided to the transporter who will carry it throughout the trip until it is being handed over to the consignee.

How to update an e-Way Bill?

An e-Way bill can also be updated once it is created. Details on the transporter, consignment, consigner. Moreover, the GSTIN of both the parties can be updated in the existing eWay bill provided the bill is not due on its validity. Simple on the website, click on ‘Update e-Way Bill’ option.

The Finance Ministry has introduced changes in the e way bill system, including auto calculation of distance based on PIN codes for generation of e-way bill and blocking generation of multiple bills on one invoice, as it seeks to crack down on GST evaders.
