How to e-verify your income tax return

After filing your income tax, the next essential step is to verify the income tax return. The Income Tax Department initiates the processing your return, once it is verified. Additionally, if any refunds, they will be processed for returns which have been submitted and verified.

The return can be verified electronically by any of these below-mentioned forms:

  1. Using OTP (one-time-password)

You can verify your income tax return by receiving an OTP on your registered mobile number and email address. OTP is a 10 digit alphanumeric code which can be generated through the income tax department’s e-filing portal and is valid for a time period of 72 hours.

  1. Generating EVC using net banking

The verification of your return can also be done by using the net banking facility of your bank account. Log-in to your net banking account and click on the tab related to income tax filing. Select the e-verify option and you will be redirected to the e-filing portal.

  1. Receiving EVC by using the bank account based validation system

Before using this method, it is important to first pre-validate your bank account. The pre-validation process for your bank account can be done through the profile settings menu in your e-filing account. Details such as account holder name, bank name, account number, IFSC code and mobile number will be required.

The process of pre-validation will only be successful if your PAN and name match with the bank account records. The correct mobile number which is linked to that bank account must be added. After these details are confirmed and validated by the bank then after you can generate EVC using this option. The code will be received at the registered number submitted.

  1. Verifying returns through Demat account number

This method is similar to the bank account based validation. To use this method for verifying your tax returns, you must also validate your Demat account in the profile settings menu. The PAN card details, mobile number and email address should be entered. After the same is confirmed and validated by the depository then you can use this option to generate the code.

After e-verifying your ITR via net banking, there is no requirement to send the physical copy. However, if you do not want to e-verify, you will have to send the physical ITR-V.

 Using the physical method of sending ITRV/Acknowledgment receipt

Due to some reasons if the taxpayer is not able to e-verify their return then he/she can download the ITR-V also known as the acknowledgement receipt. Sign at the required place and send it to the CPC through the post. This ITR-V should reach the CPC within the time frame of 120 days from the date of upload of the return for the return to be considered as valid.

Some of the basic instructions are as below:

  1. ITR-V is a one-page document which you need to sign in blue ink and send via ordinary post or speed post. You cannot courier the ITR-V.
  2. ITR-V is a password protected document which can be downloaded from your account on the e-filing website under the ‘View Returns/Form’ on the ‘Dashboard’. This ITR-V is auto-generated after you successfully upload/e-file your income tax return. The password to open ITR-V is your PAN number in lowercase letters along with your date of birth (DOB). If your PAN number is “ABCDEF2323H” and DOB is 07/10/1984, then your password will be “abcdef12323h07101984”.
  3. There is no requirement for any supporting documents to be sent along with the ITR-V. Only the single page ITR along with your signature should be sent.
  4. After the ITR-V is received and the records are entered, you will receive an email notification for the same on your registered email address and the confirmation for your return being verified. Processing of your return will initiate after the verification.

Steps to E-verify your tax return

Step 1: Login to with your credentials (User id, Password and Captcha code)

Step 2: Select the ‘View Returns / Forms’ option to see the e-filed tax returns

Step 3: Select the option ‘Click here to view your returns which are pending for e-verification’

Step 4: Select the option ‘e-verify’

Step 5: When you click on e-verify, there is a list of modes through which you can generate and EVC

Step 6: Upon successfully generating the EVC through the desired mode, enter the EVC and submit

Step 7: A confirmation message will be displayed with a transaction ID and EVC code. Click on the green button to download the attachment. This is for your record only. No further action is required
