Finance Minister has extended the deadline to file IT returns to 30 June 2020. She has also reduced interest rate to 9 per cent from 18 per cent, on delayed deposit of TDS. The deadline to file March, April, and May, has also been extended to June-end. (Mar 24)

How to check TDS return status online
The CBDT has recently issued an order furnishing information about IT Return Filing Status to Scheduled Commercial Banks. The Income Tax Department has already provided functionality “Verification of applicability under section 194N” on its website for banks since July 1, 2020. Through this, banks or post offices can get the applicable rate of TDS under section 194N of the Income-tax Act, 1961 by entering the PAN of the person withdrawing cash.


TDS or Tax Deducted at Source is a way of collecting income tax from companies or individuals. It falls under the Income Tax Act of 1961. The Central Board of Direct Taxes or CBDT manages TDS.

Let us now look into what one means by TDS and TDS returns and what is the procedure to check the status of such returns online-

TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is a means of collecting income tax in India, under the Indian Income Tax Act of 1961. Any payment covered under these provisions shall be paid after deducting a prescribed percentage. It is managed by the Central Board for Direct Taxes (CBDT) Department of Revenue managed by Indian Revenue Service.

TDS Returns is a quarterly statement that needs to be submitted to the tax department. Submitting TDS come is mandatory if you’re a deductor. It has details of TDS deducted and deposited by you. TDS Returns include details of PAN of the deductor and deductees, particulars of tax paid to the government, TDS challan information and other details as required in the forms.

Taxpayers face a common cause of worry that is the lack of clarity about the tax deducted by employers and also if they are actually being paid. There have been instances when in the name of TDS, the deduction was never actually paid or paid with delays. The worry over somebody creating a mistake with your PAN number at the time of paying TDS is additionally a problem that bothers taxpayers.

The Procedure for checking one’s TDS returns status online are as follows –

  1. TDS Return Status via Pan Card.

2. TDS Returns Status via Form 26AS.

3. TDS Returns Status via Net banking.

Procedure for checking TDS returns status via pan card-

  • Visit
  • Key-in the verification code
  • Click on ‘Proceed’
  • Enter the PAN and TAN
  • Select the financial year as well as the quarter and the type of return.
  • Types of Return for different categories of taxpayers are as follows –

Form 24Q- Citizen’s salary payments and the deductions made for tax.

Form 26Q- Citizen’s payments other than salary.

Form 27D-TCS or Tax collected at source.

Form 27Q-Payments of foreigners and NRIs other than salary.

  • Click on ‘Go’
  • The details will be displayed on the corresponding screen.

Procedure for checking TDS status via Form 26AS-

  • Visit
  • Register yourself
  • If already a registered user, log in using the credentials
  • Go to ‘My Account’
  • Click on ‘View Form 26AS’
  • Select ‘Year’ and ‘PDF format’
  • Download the file
  • The file which is password protected can be opened by the Date of Birth as per the PAN card.

Procedure to check TDS Returns status through Net Banking-

  • Download the Authorised Net Banking App
  • Register on the Net Banking App
  • Link Bank Account Registered On the App with Pan card
  • Then one can view the status of TDS Returns via obtaining Bank statement or Record of such account through which tax is paid or register a bank account with the Income Tax Department.

There have been several advancements in the field of technology, digitization in banking due to which even many government processes have been digitized or made online. One such process is the Filing of income tax and other taxes through online E-Filing portals and E-Payment gateways like Paytm, Tez, Google pay etc. But still, people rely on the manual filing of taxes, as they don’t believe in the electronic system. They find it too complicated and thus are scared to use it. They believe it is used by people to cheat them and to claim heavy amounts in the form of commission from them. The solution to this problem will be through education of people by the government as to how one must use these portals and check how much money they have paid as taxes and what’s their returns.
