The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has introduced several changes in the marriage registration process. In one such change, the corporation has done away with the practice of mandating the presence of parents of both the bride and the groom, before the registrar.

Fire is considered the primary witness to marriage according to the Hindu rituals. That is, however, just the social part. The legal aspect places reliance on documentary evidence. The Registrar of District Marriage shall issue a marriage certificate, as per religious marriage and special acts of marriage. In India, marriage registration can be completed under two Laws, namely the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

Purpose of Marriage Registration

A marriage certificate is an essential document required for exhibiting any couple’s legal marital status. This helps in allied purposes for certain cases such as the passport office, court, bank, insurance offices, etc. This certificate can be shown to show that the bride and bridegroom were married on a specific date.

It can also be used – 

  • in case of divorce proceedings
  • in case of child paternity
  • if you want to change the name after marriage
  • claim life insurance in case of loss as part of a genealogical background

This is also conclusive evidence of a marriage.

Eligibility for applying of Marriage Registration

  • No legitimate marriage of any of the parties with any other person should subsist. 
  • The bridegroom should be age twenty-one (21) and the bride should be age eighteen (18). 
  • The parties should not be of such a nature as to be unable to give proper consent for the marriage, or to suffer from such a kind of mental disorder or to such an extent as to be unsuitable for the marriage and procreation of children, or have been subjected to recurring insanity attacks. 
  • The parties should not fall within the degree of prohibited association.

Documents required to apply for Registration

  • Application form duly filled out and signed by the bride and groom 
  • Additionally, documentary confirmation of the parties’ date of birth (Matriculation Certificate / Passport / Birth Certificate); 
  • Moreover, ID Husband and wife proof (PAN Card/ Voter ID Card/ Driving Card / Aadhaar Card). 
  • Similarly, proof of residence (Ration Card/ Voter ID Card/ Passport/ Driving License). 
  • Further, Photographs of 4 occasions (Varmala, Mangal Sutra, Mang Tika, Phere) 
  • One family photo. 
  • 2 Husband and wife witnesses each (one from each hand should be proportional to blood)

  • Photos of each witness passport size. 
  • Bridal and groom separate affidavits.
  • 7 Copy of husband and wife’s joint photographs (White background,3×2″ size). 
  • Group photo of the husband and wife, together with all the witnesses.

  • A notice on plain paper by pandit Ji claiming that groom (name) S / O ………….. (name) and the bride(name) D / O … (name) took place on …….. (date) … at … (Marriage place) and it was he who conducted it. 
  • Gurudwara / Church/ Kazi / Priest certificate in case of marriage other than Hindu 
  • Decree to divorce if either wife is a divorcee 
  • Certificate of death, if the former partner is dead

Procedure for Marriage registration

In Gurgaon, marriage registration can be done online or offline both. Here we will tell you both the procedures elaborately.

Offline procedure

  • Organize documents accordingly
  • Additionally, Draft- Prepare the application and include the affidavits needed. 
  • Moreover, access the Sub Divisional Magistrate’s office by location. 
  • Appointment- make an appointment at the registrar of the marriage office. 
  • Similarly, your presence- Please remember that your partners and your 2-3 witnesses are expected to attend.   • Fill out the bride, groom, and witnesses details 
  • Pay your marriage registration fee once you complete the details.
  • Additionally, click on the button to add and upload all your papers. You must upload bridal, groom, witnesses’ affidavit documents

  • Further, Upon successful processing of your payment, you will generate an acknowledgment slip. You can take an acknowledgment slip and a printout of your application.

Witnesses of Marriage Registration

It’s necessary to get a witness ‘s signature to register the marriage. 

There are also other requirements to become the marriage witness and they are: 

  • The witnesses should have been 21 years old. 
  • Anyone who has witnessed the wedding of the couple will be a witness to the marriage registration. 
  • Additionally, the witnesses will select to be the nearest blood relation from each bride and bridegroom. 
  • Moreover, preferably they demand that one of the parents, along with their identity and address verification, be the witness to the registration.
