How to Apply for a PAN Card

A PAN or Permanent Account Number is an important document all taxpayers must possess, as mandated in the Income Tax Act of 1961. It is the tax identity for any individual or business that is generating income. The main objective of a PAN is to track and prevent tax evasion. If you are yet to Apply for a PAN Card, you will be liable to pay taxes at the highest rate applicable. Hence, it’s high time you apply pan online if you have not got one so far. 

Instant pan card application facility- Online PAN Apply

This is a new facility launched by the honorable Finance Minister on 28th May 2020. This is a real-time, paperless facility that uses Aadhaar-based e-KYC. You can avail of this if you own a valid Aadhaar number and have your mobile number attached to Aadhaar. The IT Department has announced that PAN can be allotted through this facility within 10 minutes. You will receive your e-PAN free of cost.  

A trial initiated on 12th Feb 2020 on the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department for e-PAN and till  25th May 2020 6,77,680 instant PANs have been generated and allotted in an average turnaround time of just 10 minutes

If you do not have Aadhaar, you can also apply for a pan online. 

How most of the people are still applying for a PAN Card

1)   They visit the paperless Pan card apply online page on the NSDL website by clicking the URL 

2)   Then, select ‘Form 49A’ or ‘49A’ from the ‘Application Type’ drop-down menu. Select the appropriate type of application from the ‘Category’ drop-down menu. Select ‘individual’ if you want to apply in the individual capacity. If they want to apply for a pan card online for your business, the category is ‘company’ or ‘firm’. 

3)   They Mention the name, date of birth, the contact number and the Email Id etc in the spaces provided. Then, enter the Captcha code and click ‘Proceed’.

4)   A token number is generated as a proof of successfully registering with the NSDL service. Now, they click on the “Continue with PAN application form” button.

5)   On the next page, now they submit their digital e-KYC. And, enter personal details in the next part of the form.

6)   In this step, they need to provide their AO (Accounting Officer) Code. They get your code from the NSDL website by clicking the ‘AO Code Search for PAN’ link. They click on ‘next’ to go to the document details & declaration section.

Documents proof

7)   In this stage, the uploaded documents are declared as the proof of identity, address, and date of birth. They should also declare that the information provided is true to their information and belief. They click the ‘submit’ button.

 8)   After they fill all the details, they are asked to review the application for errors. 

9)   Now, they will be directed to pay the required application fee. They can make the payment through net banking, debit/credit card, and demand draft.

10)  Once the payment is done, an acknowledgment receipt bearing a 16-digit number is sent to the email id.  With this number, one can check your PAN card application status online at the NSDL website.

They need to send the hard copies of the documents uploaded (self-attested), the print of the online application form with two passport-sized photographs, and the signed acknowledgment receipt to the NSDL office, Pune. The address of the NSDL office is-

  1. Proof of identity (anyone from Driving License/Voter ID/Passport)
  2. Moreover, Proof of Date of Birth (anyone from High School leaving certificate/ pass certificate where the date of birth is mentioned)
  3. Proof of address (any one from Telephone Bill/Electricity Bill/Water bill/Pension Payment  Order)
For Companies Certificate of Registration  from the Registrar of Companies
For LLP Firms Certificate of Registration  from the Registrar of LLPs
For a body of individuals/association of persons/ local authority Agreement/certificate of registration number issued by the registrar of co-operative societies
For trusts Trust deed or Certificate of registration number issued by Charity Commissioner
For Partnership Firms Partnership Deed or Certificate of Registration from the Registrar of Firms
