How to apply for a driving license online in India

Remembering the days when applying for a Driving License was not less than a tiring ordeal brings back memories of long queues, lots of paperwork, and the constant chase by the applicant to get the work done.

But not anymore!

The Transport Department, Government of India, has introduced a much more comfortable and convenient way of applying for a Driving License. You can now apply for Driving Licence online and select a suitable date and time to appear at the designated Road Transport Office (RTO) for the same. This article will cover the steps involved in applying for the driving License.

As per The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory to have a valid driving license to be able to drive a vehicle. Moreover, holding a Driving License implies that its holder is a trained driver permitted to drive on Indian roads. Computerization of more than 1000 Road Transport Offices (RTOs) across the country by The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has defined same standards for documentation on a pan-India level and made the compilation of data concerning Vehicle Registration and Driving Licenses of all the states in State Register and National Register more convenient and easy.

Two software, viz., VAHAN, for vehicle registration and SARATHI, for driving licenses have been deployed, keeping in view the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, and the State motor vehicle Rules.

Types of Driving License (DL):

These are several types of Driving Licences depending upon the vehicle you wish to drive:

Learner’s License

This Licence is a temporary license with a validity of six months, and the holder of this Licence should either re-apply for the same or apply for a New Driving Licence before the same gets expired. So, you need to first apply online for the Learner’s Licence and then for the Driver’s Licence.

Driver’s License- Private/Commercial Vehicles

After completing the training for driving a vehicle, one can apply for the Driver’s Licence to either drive a private car or a commercial vehicle. The holder of a Private DL cannot drive a business vehicle.

A Commercial DL is a comparatively difficult one to obtain. The age eligibility is at least 21 years as against 18 years for a Private DL. Hence, a fitness certificate is mandatory for the driver of a commercial vehicle.
