What Is the GST State Code Used in Bangalore?

Every state in India has been assigned a GST state code. It is a fixed two-digit number that helps to know where a taxpayer or business entity is from. The first 2 digits of a GSTIN signify the GST state code. This code needs to be present in any GST invoice for businesses operating in Bangalore or in the state of Karnataka, for that matter.

The GST state code for Karnataka is 29, as per the GST state code list. For example, in the GSTIN 29BBEMS0175C3Z6, the first 2 digits (29) denote the GST state code for Karnataka. The GST state code specifies that the business is located in Karnataka. No business is allowed to operate in the state of Karnataka without having the State GST code.

The GST state code for Karnataka can be obtained from the GSTIN of the buyer, mentioned in the ‘Place of Supply’ section of a GST invoice. Moreover, this code helps the Government to assess whether to charge SGST, IGST or CGST on a taxpayer or a business entity. Further, if the State Code for both the buyer and the supplier is different, IGST will be charged. If these two codes are the same, the Government will charge both the SGST and CGST.

What Is the Threshold Limit for GST Registration in Bangalore?

At the time of inception, an annual turnover of Rs 20 lakhs was kept as the threshold limit for taxpayers to do GST registration. But, in the 32nd GST Council Meeting in January 2019, states were given options to either opt for new limits or to continue with the existing ones. Karnataka opted to raise this limit to Rs 40 lakhs for the sale of goods. Additionally, this new limit came into effect from 1 April 2019 onwards. However, no changes were made to the threshold limits for service providers in the state of Karnataka.
