What is FSSAI?

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health & Welfare, Govt. of India. FSSAI ensures safety and reliability to consumers on the consumption of drinks and food products which are sold in the market. Getting an FSSAI helps the food production company get more consumers for their product. FSSAI registration ensures public health hygiene on verifying the quality of the food provided by each company. In addition, the FSSAI license and registration system can be procured online from the FSSAI website by filing the FSSAI registration form. 

Who can apply? 

All the food business organizations which include manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food can apply for a food registration/license.

Types of FSSAI Registration:

Apart from small-scale businesses, the Food Business Operators (FBOs) need to get the FSSAI license for legally running their food business. FSSAI License can be categorised into two types: 

  1. State FSSAI License 
  2. Central FSSAI License 

The categorization depends on the size of the organization and their annual turnover whether it is a medium scale business or a large scale business.

Eligibility for applying for an FSSAI Registration:

The following entities are eligible to apply for an FSSAI Registration:

  1. Those who manufacture or sell food products (on own or via retailers, hawkers, itinerant vendors or temporary stall owners)
  2. Those who distribute food regularly, publicly, for instance, at religious or social gatherings.
  3. People who run a small-scale food industry with a turnover of less than Rs.12 lakhs/annum
