Goods and Services Tax: An overview

As a seller or service provider, it is mandatory to register for the GST if your business has a turnover of above Rs.40 lakhs [if you sell physical goods] or more than Rs.20 lakhs if you supply services.

It is a streamlined taxation method under which all the business involves in the method of sales and purchases of products and services have to get the GST registration done. This taxation system is of great benefit for all the small businesses and start-ups, especially the MSME (micro, small, and medium enterprises).

The GST registration certificate is available under the Form GST REG-06.

Features of GST:

  • GST can be imposed by both central and state government as CGST and SGST  
  • IGST is applied when importing goods or services. It is also applicable in inter-state goods and service transfer/transactions. The central government collects it.
  • Both CGST and SGST are applied on all goods and services except the list of exempted ones. 
  • The CGST can be collected as an input tax credit by the central government only. Similarly, the SGST is collected by the state government.
  • The central and state can’t cross utilize CGST or SGST except in case of inter-state goods and services supply ie., under IGST model.
  • The taxpayer submits periodic return details in a common format to both central and state GST authorities.
  • The taxpayer is allotted a unique registration/identification number.
  • It does not relate to the exports of goods or services.

How to download the GST registration certificate

It can be downloaded only after the registration process is completed. Here are all the steps you need to follow for the download of your GST registration certificate:

  • Visit the Goods and Service Tax (GST) portal and click on the login button in the top right corner.
  • A new page opens up where you need to log in using the credentials.
  • Another page opens up for your GST account. On this page, in the tabs, click on the ‘Services’ option.
  • In the dropdown menu, under the ‘User Services’ tab, click on the view/download certificate for the GST registration certificate download.
  • Further, on the next page, there is a table with the date of issue and download button for the certificate. The GST registration certificate can be downloaded from there.
  • After clicking on the download button, you have the option to either open it or download it. Download Pdf of GST Registration Certificate click on the ‘Save’ option.

Details included in the GST registration certificate

The Goods and Services Tax registration certificate contains 3 pages which include the following Goods and Service Tax registering details:

  • The legal name (of individual/company)
  • The trade name (if any)
  • The type/form of business
  • The address of the place of business/individual’s address
  • Registration date
  • Validity period
  • The second page ‘Annexure A’ contains the additional place of business. Eg, godown or storage place from the business location apart from the main office.
  • The third page  ‘Annexure B’ contains the information and details regarding the owner of the business, i.e., the person with the GST registration.

Documents Applicant need to submit for GST registration

Before getting the register certification, it is mandatory to complete the GST registration procedure, for which the list of documents to be submitted is as follows:

  • PAN card: Whether it is a company or an individual, the PAN details of both have to be submitted.
  • Phone number and email address: The owner/taxpayer has to provide both the phone and email ID for contact and verification purposes.
  • Bank account number and details
  • Letter of authorization as issued by the authorized signatory
  • The digital signature of the person who has to get the GST registration certificate by the Goods and Service Tax number.
  • Incorporation certificate for companies.
  • Other important and legal documents as per the requirements that need to be filled in during the registration process.

Provisions related to the issue of GST Registration Certificate

  • According to the ACT provisions, when the government body approves the registration application, it makes a GST Registration certificate with all location details of the principal’s business available on the common portal.
  • The unique Goods and Services Tax Identification registration number shall have the following assigned characters:
  • two characters indicating the State code.
  • ten characters indicating the Permanent Account Number (PAN). Or it can be the Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number.
  • two characters indicating the entity code; and
  • one for the check-sum character.
  • The registration is effective when the applicant becomes liable to the registration. The applicant must submit the registration application within the thirty days from the effective date.
  • However, if the applicant submits the application post in the given thirty days period, then the effective date of registration will be the date of grant of registration.
  • An officer under the Act must duly sign the registration certificate for it to be valid.
  • However, the officer can verify the registration certificate through an electronic verification code as well.
  • Lastly, the applicant can share the registration number with the authority to get the certificate within three days from the date the registration was granted.
