Hierarchy of Certification

  • IAF– Right on top of the hierarchy of accreditation is the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). The IAF is the world association of Conformity Assessment Accreditation Bodies and other bodies which are involved in assessment and certification for standards. The primary aim of this body is to develop a program of conformity assessment across the globe such that consumers can rely upon accredited certificates. Most of the countries in the world are members and signatories to the IAF.
  • Accreditation Board– Second on the hierarchy comes to the accreditation board which is country-specific. Each country has its own accreditation board. In India, this board is called the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB).
    • Certification Bodies– At the last level of the hierarchy exists the certification bodies which are responsible for granting certificates of standards to companies and organisations. These certification bodies need to be members of their national accreditation boards.

Checking Validity of ISO Certification

There might be times when companies need to check the validity of their ISO certificates or even consumers might have to check whether their service provider has a valid ISO certificate. There could be times when a service provider might falsify a certificate in order to avoid the costs associated with getting a certification body to provide with ISO certification.

The manner in which the certification process works is that ISO issues certain standards with respect to products and services. An organisation which wishes to obtain ISO 9001 certification need to comply with the standards prescribed. Pursuant to this, the company or organisation hires a certification company, which assesses whether the organisation is in compliance with the ISO standards. If the company is in compliance then the auditor grants the certificate, if not, the company is given some time to bridge the gaps and become compliant, pursuant to which a certificate is granted. However, in order for a certification company to be able to grant a certificate, it needs to be accredited to the national accreditation body which needs to be accredited to the IAF.

All the ISO certificates that are granted by the certification bodies usually consist of the registration/certification number, the logos of both the certification body as well as that of the national accreditation board. If either of the logos is missing on the ISO certificate then the certificate is definitely not a valid one. If the logos are present, the validity of the certificate can be checked by following the below-mentioned process-

1) Go to the IAF website- and click on the drop-down menu which says “IAF Members and Signatories”.

2) Find the country that you are looking for and click on that, a page opens which gives the details of the national accreditation body. If the name of the accreditation body that is there on the ISO certificate is not on the list of accreditation bodies for that country then the ISO certificate is invalid.

3) The link for the website of the accreditation body gives on this page. After going to the webpage of the accreditation body, a search can be made for the certification body which has granted the certificate. If the name of the certification body does not exist on the website of the accreditation body, it implies that such a certification body is not accredited, making the certificate invalid.

4) If the name of the certification body is there on the website, it means that such a certification body is accredited. In order to further check the validity of the certificate, it can be checked on the accreditation body website as some of these websites maintain public records. If the accreditation body does not keep public records, they can be mailed in order to find out the validity of the ISO certificate.

5) If there is no online registry nor does the accreditation board reply, the mail can be forwarded to and

By the end of this process, one can determine the validity of their own ISO certificate or the ISO certificate of the service provider whom they seek to hire. Given a large number of cases of falsification of ISO certificates because of the benefits attached to this, this process of online verification is of utmost importance.
