For income tax returns filed after 1 September 2019, taxpayers can use an Aadhaar instead of PAN. According to the Union Budget 2019, income tax officers can assign PANs to taxpayers who file their taxes with Aadhaar.

PAN stands for Permanent Account Number. It is a ten digit alpha-numeric code that is allotted by the Income Tax department to any person who earns an income that can be taxable. It is also the most commonly used government-issued document for ID proofs. Due to its high functionality, the government has made the process of applying for a PAN card simple and easy. In fact, it was one of the first government services to be offered online. The entire process may take up to twenty days to complete. During this time, individuals might want to track their application to see how much longer it will take them to receive the documents. The government has facilitated this by issuing acknowledgement numbers to all applicants. Individuals may use this number to check PAN card application status online. Checking PAN Status Through The NSDL Website

NSDL stands for the National Securities Depositories Limited. This is another portal that facilitates status updates of PAN applications. The steps to follow for this purpose are listed below:

  1. First and foremost, users should visit the NSDL’s official PAN tracking portal using this link.
  2. From the homepage, click on the option titled Track PAN Status.
  3. Next, navigate to the Application Type section and choose the PAN-New/Change request option.
  4. Next, users must enter their 15-digit acknowledgement number in the appropriate field.
  5. To finish the verification process, users need to enter the CAPTCHA code and click on Submit. A new page displaying your Pan status will then pop up.
  6. Do make sure that you attempt to track your PAN application only seven to ten days after applying. It usually takes the authority this long to register the application on their database and to have the changes reflected on their website.

How To Check PAN Status Using Name And Date Of Birth

The TIN-NSDL portal allows users to check their PAN Card application status using just their name and date of birth. It must be noted here that you must keep the unique 15-digit Acknowledgement number allocated while making the application in handy. The portal allows an alternate way to track your PAN status. Here’s a quick look at how users can use their name and Date of Birth to track the status of the PAN Card application.

Check PAN Status Using Income Tax Website

While the system doesn’t directly allow you to track your PAN card status online using these details, it will enable you to verify the information on the card. Here’s a quick look at how you can access your PAN details using your name and DoB through the IT Department’s official website. 

  1. First and foremost, users should visit the Income Tax E-Filing Department’s official portal using this link.
  2. From the homepage, navigate to the tab named Quick Links and then click on the Verify PAN Details option.
  3. PAN card status online
  4. In the window that pops up, enter your full name, PAN number and DoB to proceed.
  5. Next, users must select the appropriate status, from amongst Individual, HUF, Association, Company, Government, Body, Judicial Person, Local Authority and Trust.
  6. To complete the verification process, enter the CAPTCHA code in the appropriate field.
  7. Click on the Submit option to proceed further.
  8. In case the details match, a new page will pop up bearing the following message;
  9. PAN is Active, and the provided details match.

  11. Users must visit the official website of the IT Department through this link.
  12. Next, enter your unique 12-digit Aadhaar Number in the required field.
  13. To complete the process of verification, enter the CAPTCHA code in the appropriate field and click on Submit. 
  14. A new screen will then pop up displaying the status of your PAN Card application.

Do bear in mind that to avail this feature, users must have linked their Aadhaar card and mobile number. 

Tracking PAN Application Status Using Phone

To track your PAN Card status via call, users should call a TIN call centre on the following toll-free number: 020-27218080

You must provide the operator with your 15-digit acknowledgement number to verify your application. The executive will then update you regarding the status of your PAN application.

Checking PAN Application Status Via Sms

To track your PAN status via SMS, send the following text to the number 57575

NSDLPAN<< 15-digit acknowledgement number>>

Once the server receives this text, you will get a reply via SMS indicating the current status of your PAN Card application.

However, users must wait at least three days after applying or submitting their application to use this feature.

PAN Card Application Statuses

In case the PAN Card status shows the message “Application is inward”, then that means that your application has been processed successfully by the IT Department. Meanwhile, if the status displayed reads “Under Printing”, then you will receive your card within fifteen days.

Another status that shows up reads’ Application withheld’. This usually happens if your details don’t match with your supporting documents or if you left necessary fields empty. In such cases, you will have to re-submit the valid documents to complete your application.

In case the message reads “Application under verification”, it means that the IT Department is going through your application and verifying your supporting documents. Users may expect the PAN card within the next twenty days.

In case the server says ‘Record Not Found’ after you enter your details, it means your application has not been successful. This also means that the IT Department has not processed your application and made it a part of their database. In such cases, you will need to get in touch with a TIN centre to understand what went wrong and rectify the error.
