What Are EPF And UAN?

The EPF (Employees Provident Fund) is the equal amount of the interest contributed by both the employer and the employee in the EPF account for the post-retirement needs of the employee, basically acting as a savings account.

The UAN (Universal Account Number) is the number provided to the employee by which they can check their provident fund records or login to their PF account. Along with the UAN, a password has to be set-up. Without the UAN, the employee cannot access their PF account and details.

Activating The UAN

The first and foremost step before checking the EPF balance is to activate the UAN with the help of your mobile number. The steps include the following:

  1. To activate the UAN, on the UAN portal, the mobile number and the UAN have to be entered.
  2. Next, a PIN is sent on the provided mobile number.
  3. After the pin is entered, the verification of the credentials is done.
  4. Further, the password has to be created.
  5. After the completion of these steps, the UAN gets activated.

Methods: how to check the PF balance

There are four methods of checking the EPF balance. These methods include:

EPFO portal:

  1. Open the EPF portal, with the link
  2. On this page, in the drop-down menu of the “Our Services” page, click on the “For Employees” option.
  3. A new page opens up. In this, click on the “Member Passbook” option in the “Our Services” box.
  4. Next, the employee has to enter their details and credentials including the UAN, password, and others.
  5. A new page opens up, where, by clicking on the “Member ID” the employee can view their PF balance as well as other PF account details.

UMANG App:

Introduced in 2018, along with EPF details several other services including Aadhar card, bill payment, and several others are available on the app. To access the app, the individual has to register once with their mobile number. UMANG stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-Age Governance. The steps to check the PF account balance are as follows:

  1. Download the app on the phone.
  2. Open it and click on the EPFO option.
  3. On the next page, click on the “Employee Centric Services” option.
  4. On the next page, various options are offered. Click on the option of “View Passbook”.

Balance Through Missed Call

The PF balance can be checked by the employees quickly by making a missed call on the number 011-22901406 from the mobile number that is registered with UAN and PF account. However, the only limitation with this option is that the bank account, as well as the Aadhar card, have to be linked with the UAN.

Balance Via SMS:

The last method is messaging the code on the number 7738299899 from the registered mobile number. But, it is mandatory to have the UAN activated. The code that has to be sent is EPFOHO UAN ENG. The last three letters stand for the language. ENG for English, HIN for Hindi, PUN for Punjabi, GUJ for Gujarati, KAN for Kannada, TEL for Telugu, BEN for Bengali, MAL for Malayalam, MAR for Marathi and TAM for Tamil.

Checking PF Balance for Private Trusts

The private trusts and exempted establishments have their personal PF schemes, through which the employees can check their PF account balance. Some famous exempted establishments include Godrej, HDFC, TCS, Wipro, Nestle, etc. For all such companies, the PF balance can be checked through the payslips, salary slips or even the company’s portal among other methods, if any.
